Nga Hpe Kyaung, or the Jumping Cat Monastery, is a beautiful wooden monastery built on stilts over the waters of Lake Inle and is home to a number of important Buddha statues on the Lake. Many of the statues are gilded with gold leaf and many are made in the Tibetan and Shan styles. However the defining feature of the monastery is the fact that the monks who live there have taught a number of the local cats who also laze around the monastery floor to jump through hoops for food. As I am sure any cat owner will tell you, it is not easy to train a cat and the Inle cats seem more than willing participants in this surreal pastime.
