The Essence of Bhutan
A two-week immersion that takes you deep into the mountains, the valleys, the iconic sites… the very heart, the very essence of this incredible Kingdom.
Perched on the edge of the Black Mountain National Park, Dewachen is set just outside Gangtey in Phobjikha, the largest and most significant wide alpine wetland valley in Bhutan and home to striking views and stunning scenery. The property is within walking distance of the marshes in which the endangered and sacred Black-Necked Cranes live in the winter, a truly incredible sight.
The restaurant and bar serve simple food including Bhutanese, Chinese, Indian and Continental cuisines. The fireplace and a bird's-eye view of the Phobjikha Valley below make the space all the more relaxing and cosy. Horse-riding facilities and cultural programmes are on offer, along with spa treatments.
Rooms are quite simple but spacious and comfortable and decorated in a traditional style - pine walls, flooring, and furnishings - that blends seamlessly with the natural environment. There is no wifi available (but you can connect with your surroundings!) while a traditional bukhari wood-burning stove warms the rooms in the winter.
While it may be on the basic side, Dewachen does have character and the staff are welcoming. Set in a remarkable natural landscape it's a charming place for those wanting to immerse themselves in the simple pleasures and beauty of this valley without the typical associated accommodation costs.
Basic - The 'Basic' category covers places which are very simple indeed, with extremely rudimentary facilities. These places are used when they are part of the experience, such as a village homestay, or when there are no other hotels available in an area.
