In Bhutan, there are no trains, limited domestic flights, and there is more or less just one main road that runs through the country. So, short of chartering your helicopter, the majority of travel is by car. On any trip to Bhutan, you’ll therefore be accompanied by both an experienced guide and an expert driver.
Road trips are part of the enjoyment of a holiday in Bhutan, and your journey will take you over mountain passes with incredible views and up and down astonishingly picturesque valleys. Drivers are always well versed in navigating the terrain, and there will be plenty of stops to take in the views or pick up snacks. There is never a rigid schedule in Bhutan either; flexibility is built-in, and your driver is there to ensure you see whatever you wish at a pace that suits.
Road maintenance is an important matter in Bhutan since they are the only way for locals to get around too. And, even though some of the roads are winding, the conditions are generally good, certainly on the main routes such as the one between Paro, Thimphu and Punakha. Given the nature of the landscape vehicles are quality 4 wheel drives and since you’ll spend a bit of time on the road - they always have a high level of comfort, and they’re often kitted out with a snack box too!
