There are no direct flights from the UK to Bhutan. In order to reach the main airport of Paro, you’ll travel via India, Nepal or Thailand, which means it’s surprisingly easy to combine Bhutan in a multi-country trip. Why not make the most of it?
Most travellers will go via Delhi or Kolkata, making India the obvious choice for a combination holiday. Either of these fast-paced cities would make a fascinating contrast to serene Bhutan, illuminating two very different aspects of South Asia. Alternatively, you could do a side-trip from Delhi to Rajasthan and combine with Bhutan to experience both deserts and snow-capped mountains, palaces and monasteries, on the same trip.
For a real adventure, you might consider travelling overland into Bhutan from Assam in India’s remote Northeast. This would make for an incredible journey and you would see a side to both countries that very few tourists encounter.
Bhutan is closely linked with Thailand politically, so there are direct flights from Bangkok to Paro. The two countries combine especially well as they offer the chance to see two very different approaches to Buddhism. Bangkok, in turn, opens up connections to the rest of Southeast Asia – why not try adding the magnificent temples of Angkor into the mix, or link to Laos to extend the tranquillity?
Finally, if you feel the need for a beach fix at the end of your luxury Bhutan holidays we can recommend some fabulous hotels by the sea in Thailand, The Maldives, India or Oman.
Turns out, this landlocked Himalayan kingdom is not as isolated as you might think…
