From intriguing overnight cruises down the Mekong to boutique colonial hotels brimful with history and character, Vietnam boasts some fantastic places to stay whilst visiting the country. We try to make sure that the hotels our travellers stay in are as inspiring as the experiences they have across their holiday. Here’s a list of our favourites for 2016.
Six Senses, Con Dao
A historic island where political prisoners in the French colonial era were sent and later used to imprison opponents of the regime, Con Dao now is a coveted barefoot luxury holiday destination. The Six Senses Resort, located on the east side of the island has a desert island feel. With villa accommodation complete with a private pool, it’s a difficult place to leave. Our top tip is to stay Oceanfront Duplex Pool Villa, where you can enjoy an uninterrupted view of the sea from your bathroom.
Topas Eco Lodge, Sapa
Set atop the limestone hilltops that characterize Vietnam’s northern countryside, Topas Eco Lodge is in remote Sapa, well away from other tourists boasting stunning views and nearby authentic experiences. With rice paddies surrounding, nearby trekking and opportunities to rent out a moped to visit local villages, staying at the lodge is an incredible experience.
La Residence, Hue
In the ancient city of Hue, La Residence is a heritage property, once home to the French envoy. In 2005 it was carefully restored into a luxurious boutique hotel. From the very top of the building, you can see the ancient citadel of Hue and with colonial decoration running throughout, staying here is a cultural experience in and of itself.
The Bassac Cruise, Mekong
A lovingly restored rice barge, the Bassac Cruise is a comfortable way to explore the real Mekong, away from the tourists. Run by a French company, it’s quirky and characterful with fantastic fresh food served on board. Various experiences have been developed so that you can visit local orchards and sample authentic Vietnamese fruit and vegetables. It really does allow you to get off-the-beaten-track without compromising on comfort.
Victoria Can Tho, Mekong Delta
The most comfortable hotel in the Mekong Delta, Victoria Can Tho is a colonial hotel with fantastic views over the river. Its restaurant terrace is particularly well situated with panoramic views over the Mekong. With a luxurious swimming pool and fantastic service to boot, it’s a brilliant place to stay for those wanting heritage, inspiring natural surroundings and authentic insight into Vietnamese life.
Sofitel Legend Metropole, Hanoi
A historic luxurious hotel in the centre of Hanoi, the Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi is over 100 years old and a relic of the French colonial administration. An insider tip is to stay in the historic wing for a really authentic experience and guests of the hotel have exclusive access to a bomb shelter built during the Vietnam war — it’s a must experience for those staying. The pool is magnificent and all the rooms have a wonderfully relaxing subtle smell of jasmine. It’s one of the most sought after addresses in Vietnam’s capital.
La Veranda, Phu Quoc
A charming French colonial hotel on a wonderful beach, La Veranda is a brilliant place to stay for those wanting a top-notch beach experience. Phu Quoc is famous for being Vietnam’s original ‘desert island’ experience and whilst it has become more popular, La Veranda lets you absorb the tropical delights away from the crowds.
Paradise Junk Boat, Halong Bay
Paradise Cruises, a company offering a range of experiences in Halong Bay, offers a private charter of a refurbished junk boat. You can tailor the journey through the karsts to you interests and enjoy various excursions including a visit to Cat Ba island, kayaking through the bay and enjoying a spot of squid fishing.
