Our in-country partner Tom shares his top tips from research missions to resorts. Here he gives three island recommendations, all providing the classic Maldives experience with a difference.
1. Conrad Maldives
Conrad Maldives has one of the best reefs I have snorkelled in the Maldives. The diversity of the marine life is extraordinary. Here is a little tip on where to access the best of the snorkelling: on the main island head for the part of the beach between rooms 200 and 210. From here a sandbank cuts underwater in to the middle of the coral reef making it easy to swim out to and enjoy the underwater oasis of colour.
2. Finolhu Resort
Finolhu has a particularly special foodie experience. If you walk down their sandbank, you come to The Crabshack – a robinson crusoesque building serving Sri Lankan food. The curried crab here is delicious. It’s a bit messy but worth getting stuck into. Some nights, the resident circus performers entertain you while you dine. They include magicians, mermaids and fire breathers. Finolhu offers a stylish and lively experience like nowhere else in The Maldives.
3. Soneva Fushi
Soneva Fushi is a resort which is full of unique experiences. Whether it be stargazing from a custom built tree house observatory or gauging yourself at a time of your choosing in the Chocolate room. My personal favourite experience was watching the Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck classic “Roman Holiday” at the outdoor cinema situated at the old Hummingbird helicopter landing pad. Lean back in a deck chair and enjoy some freshly made popcorn under the stars. It’s without doubt the best Cinema I have ever been to.
