5 Best Private Islands In Asia + Extras

by Matt Brazier

Private islands offer exceptional seclusion and privacy, adding an extra exclusive dimension to your luxury holiday. Here is a roundup of our favourite private islands in Asia from our own experiences.

1. Taprobane Island, Sri Lanka

An extraordinary villa, teeming with history set on top of a rocky island off Sri Lanka’s southern coast. It’s the island of fantasy with colonial verandas, a luxurious pool and fantastic service.

2. Song Saa Private Island, Cambodia

An ultra-luxurious, sustainably built resort in the Koh Rong archipelago off the coast of southern Cambodia, Song Saa offers a secluded getaway perfect for couples and honeymooners.  You can also read how Song Saa compares to the private islands of the Maldives.

3. Gili Lankanfushi, Maldives

A sumptuous laid-back luxury resort offering the perfect escapism in the heart of the Indian Ocean. For a true desert island experience – choose the Crusoe Residences which are stand-alone villas reached only by boat offering ultimate privacy.  Note – from June 2021 the Maldives is hoping to start a push to be single plastic-free!

You can also check out Gili Lankanfushi and a few others on this list in our favourite overwater hotels in Asia.

4. Baros, Maldives

An exclusive, whitesand resort surrounded by crystal clear turquoise waters. Only a 20 minute speedboat ride away from Male, the resort suits couples looking for an idyllic setting to relax.

5. Amanwana, Indonesia

The only resort on the idyllic Moyo Island, this is a wonderful place to relax and enjoy some barefoot luxury. Set in a 15 km nature reserve, the resort is set in a secluded cove and boasts a beautiful beach.

Virtually Private…

These resorts are located on secluded islands but share land with small villages or other resorts. They’re not private island experiences in the strictest of sense but certainly create a similar atmosphere…

6. Six Senses Con Dao, Vietnam

Situated on a protected national park and marine reserve, Six Senses Con Dao offers secluded luxury. With dramatic green mountain backdrops and a pristine beach, this is a perfect option for those wanting to relax in stunning natural surroundings.

7. Duwa Villas, Sri Lanka

This is a stunning colonial style property tucked on an island in Koggala Lake, near Galle. With its secluded location on the east side of the lake it certainly feels like a private island. This is a brilliant option for those wanting a luxurious base to explore southern Sri Lanka.

8. Mergui Archipelago, Myanmar

With 800 white sand pristine islands, the Mergui archipelago is a hidden gem. This experience offers not just one ‘private island’ because you get hundreds. By this we mean you are likely to see very few other tourists – if any – on the islands and you’ll have all these fantastic beaches to yourself as you island-hop by boat.
