Burma is well known for many things – the friendliness of the locals, the magnificent sight of thousands of temples at Bagan and rural life by Lake Inle – but it’s food is often overlooked compared to Thailand and Vietnam. It’s perhaps not surprising that rice is a core part of most meals eaten with a curry dish with fish, chicken and prawns and what seems to be a never ending supply of side dishes! There are regional variations and influences from other countries such as China, India and Thailand and there are some really interesting dishes to try, some of which are quite unusual such as Mohinga (noodles with fish soup) for breakfast and Laphet Thohk (fermented tea leaf salad). Here is a slideshow of our five handpicked authentic dishes to try in Burma!
