Throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, heroes have emerged all around us. From frontline healthcare workers to friends and family who never fail to check-in, countless people have shown strength, solidarity and resilience. We at Experience Travel Group (ETG) felt it was our time to give something back.

In this competition, you have the opportunity to nominate your Covid-19 hero into a prize draw to win a holiday to Asia. And not just any holiday to Asia: a specially curated retreat from ETG Revitalise, our new selection of the most rejuvenating holidays across the continent. When the dust settles and it is once again safe to travel, this kind of restorative experience might be just the thing they need.

The winning holiday to Asia will be for 11 days in one of our destinations, staying at 2 fabulous hotels for 5 nights each. We’ll be including flights from London, transfers to get you around in-country and amazing ETG experiences at each of the destinations. This is in an incredible prize worth around £5,000 and we are very excited for a hero to be whisked off on a holiday to Asia when the time is right.

We know that travel isn’t possible right now. However, we know that we will travel again, and many people in our community have expressed the desire to have a trip to look forward to when the dust settles. Our Covid-19 hero competition is by no means an attempt to flout the rules; we simply wanted to give something back now, at the time we need it most. Our hope is that it will share some inspiration, appreciation, and help show the light ahead.

Entries so far

Here is a handful of the wonderful entries we’ve had so far.

Remember, your “hero” can be anyone who helps keep your community safe and smiling in these turbulent times, from a frontline healthcare worker to your local delivery driver to the friend who arranges the best virtual quizzes. Simply tell us their story and we will enter them into the competition.

Please note that the winner will be chosen at random from the selection of entries. The prize will not go to the person who “deserves it most”, so please simply nominate the person you see fit. This is about spreading goodwill and appreciation – every entry deserves it in our eyes.

Richard nominated Julia:

Julia has been an NHS nurse for all her career, spending the majority of time in Eye Hospitals. Since the Covid virus started she has volunteered to move to the Occupational Health department dealing with the Health and Wellbeing of Nurses and Doctors on the front line. Great sacrifice for the cause as well as putting herself at risk.

Robert nominated Jennifer:

As an NHS Radiographer, Jenny is on the front line against COVID-19. Chest x-rays are the key instrument in determining the course of action for patients. Wearing PPE that is suffocating and sometimes undergoing 30 kit changes a day, the work is exhausting. Coupled with that, she has chosen to live alone so as to not potentially expose her boyfriend. She is our true hero!

Katie nominated Nathan:

Nathan is a met police officer with two young children, one of whom has been very unwell with lung issues. His wife is also a met police officer. He is living separately from his family and has been since 23rd March. He has been working long hours in London and has received unkindness and abuse from members of the public not wishing to obey the social distancing measures. He is not only exhausted, but lonely too. A trip like this would mean the absolute world to them.

Kayleigh nominated Liz:

My best friend Liz is the head chef in a large secondary school. Since the closure of schools, she has run her school kitchen single-handed to feed the children of key workers, vulnerable children and staff, that have been in school. She also makes and delivers meals to families who most need it. On top of this, she has moved out of the safety, security and comfort of her own home to protect her parents who live with her. She has worked through the school holidays and has given up so much to help and protect others. She is my hero and I am proud to call her my friend.

Alan nominated John:

Professor John is the head of research at Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. A renowned epidemiologist. I am nominating him for heading up the pioneering research work but mostly for his no-nonsense broadcasts which are incisive, thoughtful and honest!

Katrina nominated Andy:

As you might have guessed from the name, I am related to this person… It’s my dad (so I may be slightly biased). The reason I want to nominate him is that he is currently working all hours as he owns a greengrocers and the demand and market hours are really straining. Some days his only break is to sleep in his van before having to go back to the shop. Also if he was picked he would be able to take my mum who would be my second nomination anyway. She is always there to help and support everyone without ever expecting praise. She has been a carer for my grandfather and grandmother (my dad’s mum) in the past and even once made a whole wedding dress with a broken arm! They both definitely deserve a break!

Ciaran nominated Paula:

My aunt Paula is an ICU nurse and paramedic. She has been alternating between the two for the last eight weeks. She’s been conducting herself with a great deal of patience, selflessness and good humour in an increasingly-awful situation. She is a great example of the NHS at its best, and would absolutely love both the break and the chance to explore what Asia has to offer.

Anne nominated Susan:

Susan is an infectious disease doctor and PHE Director who has been working 16 hour days since January. She is wonderful and definitely a deserving Covid-19 hero!

Caroline nominated Paul:

Paul is Chief Nurse at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital. He is a good friend of mine and works so hard and handles the stress magnificently, he has dedicated his life to saving lives and making lives better and in this crisis, he carries on just doing his job. He has no perspective on how much of a hero he is, I hope he wins!

Want to nominate your Covid-19 hero into the competition?

You can enter your hero until the 31st of August 2020. We look forward to hearing their stories.

We don’t believe in standing still. Watching the world go by through a window. Hearing it through the stories of others.

You want to be in it, out there. Asking questions and finding answers. Finding yourself in worlds unknown. Finding the path less trodden. Meeting people with a different story to tell.

Just ask why, what, how, who? We’ll never stop helping you find the answers.

Our travellers come home with stories to tell, memories to keep and new ways of seeing their lives around them. That’s what happens when you truly connect with a destination.
