Borneo, Borneo (Sarawak)
Info : Merdeka Palace
Located opposite the Padang Merdeka, the Merdeka Palace is well located for many of the city’s attractions. It is within easy walking distance of the city’s commercial centre and historic sites, whilst being just a short drive from the international airport. The Satok weekends market, Sarawak Museum, Chinese Temple and open air market are all within easy reach.
On site there is a choice of dining, with an Italian eatery and a bar claiming to offer one of the largest selections of malt whiskies in Malaysia.
The hotel has a comfortable colonial charm, and many of the rooms offer views across the city or the Sarawak River. There is a gym, spa and swimming pool 8-stories up. We recommend the deluxe category of rooms for the best views.
In summary, The Merdeka Palace offers simple, clean accommodation with a great position in the city.
Superior - This is what we would describe as our standard category. These will be decent 3/4* hotels providing a really good level of service. We would generally expect them to be providing a little something extra, in terms of character, guest experience or facilities too.
We all remarked on how well tourism blended in to the local community in a positive way. At no point did we ever feel exploited or taken advantage of. We felt privileged to visit the Penan tribe in Mulu and enjoyed the market there without any pressure to spend money. Visiting Abai village and planting the trees was also a great experience for all ages of our party. Again, a privilege.
