Cambodia Grand Journey
Three-week, in-depth adventure. Take in a range of experiences and off-the-beaten-track locations that many visitors miss.
Bambu feels like an oasis in the ever-growing city of Battambang. Owned by English brothers, they wanted to encapsulate the historical aspects of the city with French Indochine design but provide a comfortable place to escape for a few hours between exploring. It is about a 10-minute walk to the historic part of Battambang, or you can borrow one of the bikes from the hotel; alternatively, the local tuk-tuk can take you around for a small fee.
You will find 16 rooms spread across four buildings around a bar, restaurant, and pool. It’s an intimate and social space, all very pleasantly designed. You’ll often find ex-pats and locals coming down for a drink in the evening, which creates a great atmosphere. The restaurant is putting itself on the map with excellent cooking - both western and Khmer.
The rooms are tastefully decorated, and you’ll find a comfy bed, with large bathrooms in most bedrooms. All have a balcony or terrace of some form. We like the suite rooms – they have views across the grounds. Some standard and superior rooms on the ground floor are a little dark, so do bear this in mind. The rooms are a little dated but still charming – the hotel was built in 2010 and subsequently has had minor refreshes.
Bambu is a classic boutique hotel with friendly staff and a welcoming smile as you return from the day. It's a comfortable and authentic place to rest up. The tropical planting adds to the ambience; it's ‘not just another hotel’ with so much care and attention from the owners. You won't find all the mod cons here, and it’s a little worn in places, but this is the most well-rounded option in Battambang.
Comfort - This is our lead in category. There will generally be a no frills approach and while some will be characterful, some will do exactly what it says on the tin - provide a clean, comfortable and good value place to spend the night. These places are normally 3* hotels.
