Info : Architecture & Design: A small group adventure

Join up to 16 other travelers on this 14 night tour of Sri Lanka taking in many of the country's highlights with a focus on the work of its most famous architect Geoffrey Bawa and the heritage that inspired him. You’ll experience his work first hand visiting and staying in several properties he designed, lived in and drew inspiration from.  There will be time to take in ancient sites and other more traditional buildings too – both traditional Sri Lankan and Dutch Colonial. These were important influences on Bawa as he developed his famous 'tropical modernism' architectural style. Bawa helped put Sri Lanka on the map as a country with an individual and sophisticated sense of style, and produced sustainable architecture long before it became a fashionable trend.

Highlights include:

  • Visit Lunuganga, Bawa’s home and lifelong project and the garden that inspired his career.
  • Stay at both Club Villa a gorgeous beachside boutique hotel designed by Bawa as villas on the beautiful south coast.
  • Explore The Cultural Triangle where ancient sites like Sigiriya and Anuradhapura show the importance of Sri Lanka in the architecture field since as far back as 477CE.
  • Stay at the Kandalama Hotel, one of the best examples of Bawa's skill in adapting design to suit environment. This is a one-off property in an enchanting location.
  • Visit Bawa’s Colombo residence and the city's parliament complex that he designed (special permission will be obtained!).
  • Gain insight into the local construction and design of an eco-property from inception. Learn about using local materials and crafting environmentally sound structures.
  • Stroll through Kandy’s botanical gardens and visit the Temple of the tooth.

Along the way, there will be many stops for little visited buildings and architectural gems around the country.

Day-to-Day Itinerary : Architecture & Design: A small group adventure

Depart the UK for Colombo, Sri Lanka.

Upon arrival in Sri Lanka your chauffeur-guide will meet you for the short transfer to Jetwing Lagoon (originally Blue Lagoon). This was one of Bawa’s first hotel projects and sits conveniently close to the airport for a first night stop.

Transfer to The Mudhouse, where you will be for two nights on a full board basis. This little-visited but beautiful area of Sri Lanka is deeply rural and life moves at a tranquil pace. Located in the heart of Sri Lanka's “dry zone”, it is characterised by startling rock formations and scattered “tanks” – village reservoirs that have provided the water for local agriculture for thousands of years and continue to do so today. The warm and friendly hospitality of the staff complements the rustic charm of The Mudhouse's design. Run with environmental sustainability as its core focus, The Mudhouse is a positive force for the people and nature with whom it co-exists. The Mudhouse offers a range of rustic accommodation in private and individually designed huts and a unique chance to experience rural Sri Lankan life in all its splendour. The design and construction techniques employed at The Mudhouse are often of particular interest to architects. The team will share their knowledge and experience of working with local materials and crafting environmentally sound structures. You’ll have two days here to relax into Sri Lanka and enjoy the many excursions and activities offered.

This morning your group guide will whisk you off to the Cultural Triangle where you’ll spend three days exploring the sights whilst based at Geoffrey Bawa’s extraordinary Kandalama hotel. The Kandalama Hotel is considered one of Bawa's most important works as it showcases so clearly Bawa's talent for creating affective spatial sequences and architectural narrative. The hotel, seemingly blends in with the jungle and is set against the cliffs of a huge granite outcrop overlooks a huge, ancient man-made lake. From the roof gardens and the bedroom balconies, stunning views can be enjoyed for miles around. During your time in the Cultural Triangle there will be chance to climb Sigiriya Rock Fortress, explore the ancient city of Anuradhapura and discover the ruins of Polonnaruwa.

Your guide will transfer you to Kandy en route visiting the cave temples of Dambulla. Two days will be spent in and around Sri Lanka’s second city. There will be chance to explore the sacred Temple of the Tooth and to consider some of the cities beautiful but less visited temples too. A must do visit to the Royal Botanical Gardens will also be organized.  Accommodation here will be at the historic Queens hotel right in the centre of the city.

Today we will travel by local train to Colombo through the countryside which is a magical way glimpse into the interior of this country and local life. We then transfer to vehicle and continue down to Galle in the South of the island. Since much of Bawa’s work was on Sri Lanka’s south coast you’ll have plenty of beach time too. On the fringe of the former Dutch Colonial town of Galle stands Jetwing Lighthouse, a testament to the iconic work of the Sri Lankan architect, Geoffrey Bawa. This elegant hotel is the ultimate tropical retreat amidst the sun, sea and sands of the southern coast and fascinating to explore. During your stay you will experience a guided walk around the 16th century Galle fort and learn about the history of design and build of this landmark.

Journey with your guide along the coast to Bentota where you’ll check in to the Bawa designed Club Villa for a two-night stay. During your time here you’ll get to explore Lunaganga, Bawa’s home and the place that inspired him to study architecture. There is also chance to visit his brother’s home with its beautifully landscaped gardens.

 DAY 13 & 14 COLOMBO

Time to explore the capital and there is no better way to do so than with a Colombo City Walk. The engaging local guide will bring the heart of the city to life and you’ll feel the influences that have shaped Colombo over the years. Whilst in the capital city there is chance to visit No 11, Geoffrey Bawa’s Colombo Residence, we'll also obtain special permission for you to explore the parliament complex he designed.  During the day enjoy lunch at Paradise Road Café, not just a great spot for a meal but also Bawa’s old office

Depart early morning for the airport and your onward flight home.
