Ride through rice paddies, verdant orchards, and the fascinating ruins of ancient cities and what remains of glorious former kingdoms. Covering several UNESCO archaeological and historical sites, this 11 day cycling tour is the very best of overland experiences offering spectacular country scenery and Thailand’s extraordinary ancient history.

Highlights include

  • Authentic Thai culture on an off the beaten track route
  • Beautiful Chiang Mai
  • Lampang: the cowboy town
  • Travel along rural roads past glorious ancient temples
  • Sukhothai - the first capital of 13th and 14th century Siam
  • Visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ayutthaya
  • Explore vibrant Bangkok
  • Perhaps extend the stay for some relaxing beach time on a paradise island

Tour Profile: The 11 day cycle element of the holiday covers 925km, with 8 full days and 2 half days of cycling. The distances on some days exceed 100km. Beginning in northern Thailand, the first two days include some climbs over the foothills, but from the third day, the terrain is flat. There is only one transfer by vehicle, at the end of the trip, to avoid Bangkok traffic.

Suitability: Some of the rides are tough, and daily distances often exceed 100km, so a good level of fitness is a great asset for this cycling tour. You will always have a supporting bus close at hand.

Trail Conditions: The road conditions are good, with quality tarmac tracks leading along mostly flat terrain, with the exception of days 1 and 2.

Enquire today for one of the best overland experiences in Thailand.

Day 1 Depart the UK

Depart the UK on your overnight flight to Chiang Mai

Day 2 Chiang Mai

Arrive in Chiang Mai, your guide and driver will meet you and transfer you to your hotel for check in.

 Day 3 Chiang Mai

Your personal guide will meet you today for a tour of Chiang Mai tailored to your interests. Explore Doi Suthep Temple, the markets and the city itself, perhaps taste some delicious street food too!

Day 4 Chiang Mai

Now you’ve recovered from your flight and acclimatized its time to begin your cycling adventure. You’ll meet your cycle guide at lunch time for a bike check and briefing. This afternoon there is the opportunity to ride through Chiang Mai and warm up for the following day.

30-50km Ride

Day 5  Chiang Mai to Lampang

Travelling along the old highway out of Chiang Mai towards Lampang, enjoy the lovely tree lined boulevard and gently rolling terrain. The halfway point brings a long climb with a steep section at the end. Known as the cowboy town, Lampang people still use horse-drawn carriage. Along the way, you will visit an elephant camp, and an ancient, sacred Chedi built in 1044 called Wat Phra That Hariphunchai.

120km Ride

Day 6 Lampang to Uttaradit

The ride today is challenging, with long distances and three sets of hills to cover. Take it easy as the end sections can be steep, but the support vehicle will always be close at hand. The scenery is worth it - teak forest, gorgeous temples, reclining Buddhas, and rural scenery. Today’s ride is an authentic off-the-beaten-track experience in the heart of provincial northern Thailand.

 145km Ride

Day 7 Uttaradit to Sukhothai

The provincial Thai riding experience continues today through secluded and stunning country paths, shaded by palm tree canopies. Wind through villages and pass by sprawling ride paddies as the journey leads you to Sukhothai. This ancient city reigned during the “Golden Age” of Siam in the 13th and 14th centuries. An important commercial and religious centre, the influence of this city spread itself far and wide into Burma, Cambodia, and Malaysia.

 90km Ride

 Day 8  Sukhothai

Explore the historic park at your leisure on bike, with over 193 ruins, three moats, four gateway bridges, and stunning Buddha statues scattered throughout. Alternatively, leave the bike behind and explore the ancient city on foot.

 30km Ride

Day 9 Sukhothai to Khampeng Phet

Known as the “Diamond Wall City”, Khampeng Pet was a fortress used by the military in the protection of Sukhothai from invaders. Lying in ruins and covered in moss, the fortress stands still in time, in contrast to the modern restored Sukhothai surroundings. You can visit the sites by bike or on foot at your leisure. The following ride to Khampeng Phet is scenic and rural, with breathtaking landscapes to hold your attention.

 85km Ride

Day 10 Khampeng Pet to Nakorn Sawan

The ride into the heartland today is full of rice fields – you’ll find it easy to believe that Thailand is the number one rice exporter when you experience the breadth of the fields firsthand. Keep an eye out for ducks and water buffalos bathing in the puddles along the way. Not often frequented by tourist, this region is full of curious locals, so stop for a friendly Sawadee.

165km Ride

Day 11 Nakorn Sawan to Singburi

The landscape changes dramatically leading up to your arrival in Bangkok, with industrial surroundings and small towns scattered among the expansive fields. Along the country roads, look up and admire the 60 foot long reclining Buddha in Ang Thong.

110km Ride

Day 12 Singburi to Ayutthaya

Today’s ride will take you to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Aytthaya, the old Siamese capitol along the Chao Phraya River. Hailed as Siam’s centre for more than 400 years until its demise by the Burmese in 1767, the site is now a historical park with many magnificent temples waiting to be explored.

90km Ride

Day 13 Ayutthaya to Bangkok

Today marks the last stretch of your trip to Bangkok, along rural roads and past Bang Pa-In, previously King Chulakorn’s summer palace. The cycling ends in northern Bangkok, with a vehicle transfer for the last few kilometres. A well-deserved celebratory dinner with your fellow cyclists is planned in the evening!

60km Ride

Day 14  Bangkok

Today is a free day to enjoy Bangkok. We provide a personal guide for the day who will show you any aspect of the city you choose, be it the Grand Palace, the markets or the famous street food stalls.
