An action-packed holiday perfect for adventurous families with teenage children. An exciting mix of proper adventure with a hint of luxury! This trip is ideal for those who enjoy activities and like to get off-the-beaten tourist trail, and who would like to experience something of the ‘real’ Sri Lanka (with a few lovely hotels in the mix).

Highlights Include:

  • Blissful boat safaris at one of Sri Lanka’s most exciting lodges: Gal Oya will connect you to some extraordinary wildlife in a unique way
  • Kick back and enjoy some much-needed quality beach time and even take surfing lessons at Arugam Bay
  • Step back in time and marvel at the extraordinary sights of the Cultural Triangle.
  • Experience a completely different and fast-disappearing way of life in the Knuckles Mountain Range – so off-grid, there is no road

The transport, with one of our fantastic team of chauffeur guides, is included throughout your holiday. Local guides are available when you need them, and there is space for you to create your memories too.

As with all our holidays, this itinerary is just a starting point. We can tailor it completely to suit your budget, pace and style. To find out more about how this suggested itinerary could inspire your own holiday, fill in the form below.

DAY 1 DEPART THE UK

Depart the UK bound for Colombo in Sri Lanka.

DAY 2 & 3 RURAL ANAMADUWA

On arrival, you'll be met by your private chauffeur guide who will transfer you to your hotel for the next two nights, The Mudhouse; a very unique, off-grid eco-hotel in the countryside. There are a range of brilliant activities to keep you entertained, such as bike rides, cookery tours, and kayaking. You’ll feel like you’ve left the worries of modern life behind you!

DAYS 4-6 SIGHTS AND VILLAGES IN THE CULTURAL TRIANGLE

Today you'll travel through the countryside with your chauffeur guide to the Cultural Triangle.

Over the next couple of days, you will experience the magnificent Sigiriya Rock Fortress, with an early start to avoid the crowds. Discover the Pidurangala Rock Temple and hike to the summit of the temple for stunning views of Sigiriya. Visit the ancient city of Polonnaruwa and a local primate research centre. We’ll also take you to lunch in a secret but exceptional location very much off-the-tourist trail.

DAYS 7 - 8 ON THE FARM

Transfer to Jim's Farm, a unique place to stay in the countryside, midway between the ancient sites of The Cultural Triangle and the city of Kandy. During your stay, there will chance to visit Kandy if you wish or simply to enjoy the rural location. On a farming village tour, you can learn about the exotic crops as you explore the farm, meet the local families and taste delicious home-cooked food.

DAYS 9 - 10 TREKKING IN THE KNUCKLES

The next adventure is afoot as you travel into the mountains to Grandma & Grandpa's House in the heart of the Knuckles Moutain Range. The journey takes you through some incredible scenery with spectacular vistas. The last part of the journey is on foot to the house, a part of the Abode homestay project. Here you'll enjoy a homecooked meal and lodging. A longer hike will lead you deeper into the mountain wilderness until your next overnight stay, where the washing facilities are a waterfall! Abode is an utterly unique experience for all the family and one you are likely to remember for a very long time.

DAYS 11 & 12  SAFARI SECRETS

Next, head Gal Oya National Park for a two-night stay at the beautifully designed eco-lodge. Home to Sri Lanka’s largest lake, you can encounter all manner of wildlife on a boat safari and by foot, including Asian elephants and a vast array of birdlife, far away from other tourists.

DAY 13-15 EAST COAST BEACH

Travel east from Gal Oya to Arugam Bay. The remote village is home to some of the best surf breaks on the island, but if you're not keen on surfing, there is plenty of wildlife and beach action to keep you occupied. There is a laid-back vibe here and it's a great location from which to spend time relaxing.

DAY 16 TRAVELLING WEST

Depart for Colombo on a short and scenic seaplane flight. If you have a little more time to spare you could travel back by road and include stays in Yala National Park, Tangalle and/or Galle.

When you reach Colombo you'll make your way to Gampaha, a relaxing rural region with coconut farms and pineapple plantations, a lovely base for the last night of your adventure.

DAY 17 FLY HOME

Depart Colombo for your flight back to the UK.

As every holiday is unique to you, prices vary. To give you an indication, our holidays typically cost between £4,000 and £6,000 per adult depending on trip length and time of year as well as the hotels and flights involved. We offer child and seasonal discounts. You can read our ultimate guide to holiday costs in Asia for more in-depth information.
