The Golden Triangle & the Himalayas
An adventure from Rajasthan to the Himalayas. The off-the-beaten-track Kumaon region of Uttarakhand, tigers in Corbett, crafts in Jaipur and the Taj Mahal.
Nainital is a picturesque hill station in the Kumaon Himalayas, known as Northern India’s ‘Lake District’. Perched at around 2,000m, the town is built around the Naini Lake, often dotted with colourful sail and rowboats, and surrounded by seven hills. The emerald lake is steeped in mythology and is said to have originated from the eyes of the goddess Sati.
Despite being a popular destination for domestic tourists, particularly in the summer months, Nainital sees relatively few international visitors and remains an ‘off-the-beaten-track’ destination. This doesn’t mean there’s nothing to do, though.
Walking through Nainital reveals a colonial charm, evident in the architecture, the Governor’s House (or Raj Bhavan) and the lakeside Yacht Club. The bustling markets offer a glimpse into local life and a chance to peruse the handicrafts and local delicacies on offer. There’s also an abundance of hotels, and the Raj Bhawan Golf Course is just outside the town. This unique course is a draw for keen local golfers thanks to its beautiful scenery and proximity to the town. It’s best to stay off the tees after 5pm, though, if you want to avoid an encounter with a leopard!
A visit to Nainital offers a varied and immersive experience in a little-known corner of Northern India. Whether boating on the Naini Lake, exploring colonial-era landmarks, or dodging leopards on the golf course, we recommend visiting this beautiful and fascinating town.
