Temples, Jungles & Trains
Cross India from east to west, enjoying the incredible history, religion, remote jungles and wildlife along the way.
A World Heritage Site, Konark is famous for the beautiful Sun Temple built by King Langula Narasimha Deva, in the 13th Century. Built of Khondalite, it took 1,200 masons 16 years to complete. With exquisite stone sculptures, life size lions and elephants, warriors on horseback and battle scenes, the temple represents a war chariot. The 12 wheels may symbolise the months of the year and each has 8 spokes (the division of the day being 8 prahars). According to Hindu mythology the sun god traverses the sky in a chariot drawn by 7 horses. The wheels actually act as sundials and keep track of the Sun god’s progress across the sky. A testament to the high standards of ancient Indian art and engineering skill.
