Discover three of India's northern states
Bespoke Holiday Itinerary / Experience Tour

Info : Discover three of India's northern states

This holiday is designed for travellers with an adventurous spirit who like to get away from the tourist trail, who have a desire to explore eclectic, busy and ever evolving Indian cities, but who also want to contrast urban life with some very rural, national park time.

Take time to delve into Kolkata, Varanasi and Lucknow with our signature experiences in each. You’ll journey by car, train and minimal internal flights so that you can experience the beautiful rural life and lanscape of the north as you move around. You’ll spend 6 days exploring two of India’s more remote national parks in Uttarkhand and Uttar Pradesh; allowing completely different wildlife experiences in each and, if you're lucky, a chance to spot the infamous tiger.

Highlights include:

  • Taking lunch with an art collector in his home in Kolkata
  • Watching sunrise from your private boat on the River Ganges
  • Exploring off-road in a jeep as you explore the inner depths of Corbett National Park
  • Chatting with a farmer in rarely visited Dudhwa National Park

As with all of our suggested itineraries, we can tailor-make your holiday to suit your budget, style and expectations. Find out about our exclusive ‘Journey Planner’ here.

Day-to-Day Itinerary : Discover three of India's northern states

Depart the UK for Kolkata.

DAYS 2 - 4 Kolkata Old and new India

On arrival at Kolkata airport, you will make the short journey by car to your deluxe hotel in the centre of the city. The rest of the day is at leisure to recover after your flights.

Over the next few days you will get a real insight into Kolkata; the former capital of British India - a riot of colour and a hub of Bengali culture where slums and shopping malls are interspersed with beautiful colonial architecture. Highlights include a walking tour around Bow Barracks and Burrabazar neighbourhoods, lunch with an art collector and a private river boat journey on the River Hoogly with Indian snacks and Darjeeling tea! You’ll also spend a morning at the Victoria Memorial, Kolkata’s most famous monument and walk through the Gariahat Food market with its array of street food. An action packed few days which really gives you an overview of this ever changing city.

DAY 5 & 6 Varansi The holiest of Hinduism's seven cities

This morning you will rise early for the private transfer to Kolkata airport for your short flight to Varanasi.  On arrival you’ll be picked up by your driver and dive straight into sightseeing by taking an orientation tour of this vibrant city. You’ll be well settled in after your time in Kolkata but the markets and alleys will give you a new assault the senses. The afternoon allows some relaxation at your simple hotel on the banks of the Ganges. In the evening you’ll proceed to the ghats to watch the sunset by boat and then witness an Aarti ceremony.

The next day will be spent exploring the river Ganges on a private boat journey. It’s an amazing photo opportunity as the pilgrims come to bathe in the holy water during sunrise. You’ll also visit the important Buddhist centre of Sarnath, where Lord Buddha preached his first sermon.

DAY 7 & 8 Lucknow Heritage walks and high tea

Today you will be dropped off at Varanasi train station to board the Amritsar Mail for your approximate 6 hour journey to Lucknow. Trains are an integral part of Indian life and no visit to this country is complete without one!

On arrival at Lucknow you’ll be picked up by your driver and driven to your central hotel for some downtime before you take a guided walking tour through Hazratganj.

A full day tour takes you first to the Residency, which was the British campus that witnessed nearly 3,000 deaths during the uprising of Indian troops against their British officers in 1857. Then to the Bara Imambara, built as a relief measure after a devastating famine in order to provide employment in the 1780s. In the afternoon you’ll take high tea in a beautiful library, which replicates the British custom made popular by to the large Anglo-Indian community.

DAY 9 - 11 Dudhwa National Park uttar Pradesh wildlife

This morning you will drive to the remote Dudhwa national park near the border with Nepal, a journey of around 4 to 5 hours. You will be based here for the next 3 nights, with plenty of wildlife spotting opportunities.

The vast expanse of Dudhwa national park was made a Project Tiger reserve in 1988; it has a spectacular array of wildlife including leopards, black bears, rhinoceros and around half the world’s Barasinghas (12-antler deer).

While staying in the region you will explore the area around the hotel, with a farm and a village visit to see massive sugar cane plantations and probably crocodiles too in the forest swamps. You can spend the morning and afternoon on game drives in the tall grasslands and forested areas, and you also have the chance to take a boat trip into the Katarniaghat wildlife sanctuary, exploring dense swamps and steaming wetlands.

DAY 12 - 14 Jim Corbett National PArk UTTARKAHAND WILDLIFE

After breakfast at the hotel, you will be met by your and driven to Corbett National Park, your base for the next few days. The journey takes around 6-7 hours with stops along the way.

It is a green and lush region which extends over 1,300sq km, and is made up of grassland and forests. The Ramganga River bisects the forest and forms a reservoir at its centre. The park protects wild elephants, tigers and sloth bears, nearly 600 domestic and transitory birds, and remarkably rare reptiles. There are plenty of opportunities over the next few days to explore the park by jeep, as well as trekking through the buffer zone and the Jim Corbett heritage trail.

DAY 15 Back to Delhi and Fly home (or Stay!)

Today you will be driven back to Delhi Airport which will take around 5 hours, ready for your flight home. If this is too much to all do in a day, you might like to add another night into Delhi, or perhaps go to the beach. All of our tours are tailor-made, which means it’s easy to change them to suit your requirements. Please do call one of our India specialists on 0207 924 7133 to discuss in more detail.
