An off-the-beaten-track two-week journey exploring remote areas of Rajasthan from the lake city of Udaipur in the south to the heart of the untouched Shekhawati region, Bikaner, in the north. You'll have the chance to stay in an extraordinary tented camp and a variety of forts and palaces of differing styles along the way, whilst gaining an insight into the different landscapes and ways of life prevalent in these remote regions of the desert state.

Begin your holiday in the low key lake city of Udaipur before heading to rural Jawai for several wildlife safaris and to experience village life. The blue city of Jodhpur has many charming and historic features, while your Jeep safari to remote tribal villages offers an insight into unchanged tribal life. Spend the night in a tented camp in the Thar desert, stay in the small town of Nagaur in a vast, renovated fort and visit the heartbeat of the remote Shekhawati region, Bikaner before ending in Delhi.

Highlights:

  • Wander through the local markets and narrow streets of India’s most romantic city, Udaipur.
  • Journey to Jawai, a remote and wild area of Rajasthan where you will explore the region and its diverse wildlife on several safaris with a local naturalist.
  • Get off-the-beaten-track out west in the wilderness on a jeep safari, immersing yourself in the lives of various tribal villages.
  • Ride a camel through the swaying sand dunes as the sun sets before staying overnight in a desert camp.
  • Go remote in the city of Bikaner, discovering the magnificent 16th century Junagarh Fort on a private walking tour.

As with all of our suggested itineraries, we can tailor-make your holiday to suit your budget, style and expectations. Find out about our exclusive ‘Journey Planner’ here.

DAY 1: DEPART THE UK

Depart the UK on your flight to Udaipur.

DAYS 2 & 3: UDAIPUR

You will be met by your local guide at the airport and transferred to your hotel where you will be for a two-night stay. On the outskirts of the Aravalli hills, the beautiful city of Udaipur is one of the most romantic cities in India. Spend the next day exploring the city, beginning at its vegetable markets before wandering through the streets and continuing through the spice market and textile streets. This is a fun, leisurely walk that acts as an introduction to the types of markets that make Indian cities so intoxicating.

DAYS 4 & 5: JAWAI

Drive to Jawai this morning, a remote and wild region of rural Rajasthan. In the afternoon, you will explore the region on a jeep safari with a driver-tracker and local naturalist on board. Leopards are the predominant attraction and their population is thriving, while you have the chance to also spot Nilgai antelopes, crocodiles, langur monkeys, wild boar and over 100 bird species. You can take a morning or afternoon safari and then relax at your leisure at your former palace, or perhaps take a walk with one of the local Rabaris through the quiet village.

DAYS 6 & 7: JODHPUR

Journey several hours north this morning to Jodhpur where you will be for three nights. As Rajasthan’s second largest city, it is both charming and historic, with its most distinctive feature being the electric blue of the old town buildings. Spend a full day touring the city with your private guide, enjoying views from the imposing Mehrangarh Fort, while also strolling through the medieval streets of the Old City and visiting numerous palaces, temples and havelis.

DAY 8: JEEP SAFARI

You’ll be taken into the wilderness of western Rajasthan on a jeep safari today to see the lives of various tribal communities completely off the beaten path where people live in complete harmony with nature. You will be welcomed with open arms and a big smile into the tiny hamlets before enjoying a simple but delicious and fresh lunch. All along the drive, you can spot wildlife, such as the black buck, blue bull and many bird species.

DAY 9: DESERT CAMP

Head into the desert for an overnight stay at the Manvar Desert Camp. In the afternoon, you will ride a camel across the sand dunes of the Rajasthan desert. From your vantage point, you’ll have a chance to spot the shy Indian gazelle as they make their way across the sand, watch children ambling home from school and appreciate the magical views as the sun slowly sets.

DAY 10: NAGAUR

After several hours of driving this morning, you’ll arrive in Nagaur for an overnight stay in this small, bustling town built around the impressive 12th century Ahhichatragarh Fort (where you’ll stay!). With a large Muslim population, within the walls of the old city, you’ll find several beautiful mosques, too - another different experience to take away from this journey through the desert state.

DAYS 11 & 12: BIKANER

Journey north into the Shekhawati region to Bikaner and stay for two nights. A city tour will take you through the 16th century Junagarh Fort, home to some magnificent palaces, a chapel and a picturesque ensemble of courtyards and balconies.

DAY 13: DELHI

Fly from Bikaner back to Delhi today on the new direct service, where you will stay for one night.

DAY 14: FLY HOME

You will be collected from your hotel and transferred to Delhi Airport for your flight home.
