The Plains of Bengal
Explore the heritage of Bengal on this fascinating adventure, ideal for India second-timers or those looking for something different.
An 18th-Century relic painstakingly restored to its former glory in 2016, Bari Kothi is a true heritage hotel overlooking the Hooghly River near Murshidabad - the forgotten capital of Bengal. The property alone will introduce you to the life and architectural influences of the area with its fascinating restoration story. Beyond the premises itself, you’re ideally based to delve deeper into the history, heritage and monuments of the captivating region.
As for the accommodation, there are 15 spacious suites - none are the same, each has its own individual story and unique antique decor. At Bari Kothi, you can also expect tasty local food and sundowners along the 100 ft Ghat alongside the river.
There is no pool on-site and the service may not be on a par with the more traditional chain hotels, but this is a comfortable and interesting place to stay - easily the best option in this lesser-explored part of historic Bengal.
Comfort - This is our lead in category. There will generally be a no frills approach and while some will be characterful, some will do exactly what it says on the tin - provide a clean, comfortable and good value place to spend the night. These places are normally 3* hotels.
