Luxury & Adventure in Rajasthan
Eschew the cities and head for the vast skies and timeless qualities of Rajasthan's rural backcountry.
On the border of the Kumbhalgarh Wildlife Sanctuary, Mountbatten Lodge is a genuinely original boutique hotel experience: the only one of its kind in India. It’s remote and very tranquil here, and the property itself has an amazing history even though it is relatively new on the scene. Reggie Singh is the man behind the operation, and he aims to recreate a regal and colonial atmosphere from the Raj days, without it being superficial or phoney. The staff members here are predominantly members of the Rathore clan, the same proud clan that established Jodhpur in 1459 AD. The work they have put into this idyllic and very intimate paradise is quite extraordinary.
There are only four suites in the entire lodge, each of which is superbly furnished with a private plunge pool, enormous four-poster beds, and a spacious bathroom. The two-bedroom suite is an excellent choice for families, and all guests have the chance to share experiences with the owner himself. The meals are lovingly prepared on-site for all the guests.
You can take a jeep safari to the nearby Ranakpur Temples or the Kumbhalgarh Fort, or an elephant safari through the Aravali countryside. The staff is very involved and helpful, and the standard of service is incredibly high. The lodge is quite remote, and the package includes meals, so if you’re not so keen on eating all your meals in the one place, it might not be the experience for you. But for visitors looking for a unique two-night stay between Udaipur and Jodhpur, we would highly recommend Mountbatten Lodge.
Deluxe - This is our first really 'upmarket' category. It might be a beautiful tiny hotel with very limited facilities or a 5* resort hotel with all the trimmings; but any hotel in this category will be a well-run establishment with very comfortable rooms, a strong service ethos and excellent food.
