Rolling green lawns and colourful flowerbeds surround the cottages at The Taj Savoy, making for a quaint, graceful choice for a stay in Ooty. The hotel is steeped in British heritage and history, all of which is apparent in the detail of both the interior and the landscaped gardens. Come here for old English comforts such as the English bar, dining room, and lounge, which are all warm and inviting.
The 40 rooms are situated in colonial style cottages, constructed in the 19th century as the Raj used the small town as one of several summer retreats. They are decorated in an olde-worlde style with fireplaces, heaters, and plenty of beautiful flowers in the gardens surrounding the cottages. Families will appreciate the two-bedroom suites. Whether you’d call it charming colonial-style or slightly dated, a stay at the Taj Savoy is a bit like going to visit Granny!
The property is well worth a stay for its former colonial charm and to get a feel for what life must have been like for the British who looked to escape the heat of the plains. It probably isn’t for those wanting a luxury mountain escape though – please ask your travel consultant to decide if it is right for you.
Ooty itself is now a quite dusty and bustling hill station with its real charm found in the landscaped estates and vibrant green rolling hills of the Nilgiri range that surround the town. The famous Nilgiri Mountain Railway is close by and is the real highlight of a stay in Ooty being the only meter gauge, rack railway in India which is still in operation. Whether you arrive or depart on this service and it is well worth the time – the scenery is pretty jaw-dropping too.
