Magic Bay, Halmahera, North Maluku

Magic Bay provides travellers with a quiet, private and peaceful stay on the lovely Rao Island. On the north tip of Halmahera in the heart of the coral triangle, two private beach bungalows are set amongst unspoilt nature overlooking a pristine stretch of white, sandy beach.

From Daruba airport, the bungalows are a one and a half-hour boat ride away. Travellers are given a chance to disconnect as there is no telephone or internet connection available (though one can be found in the nearby village). With a peaceful atmosphere and the sounds of the ocean and birdlife, coupled with a complete lack of any light pollution at night, this place is pretty special. Along the 1,400 metre stretch of shallow, clean beach, you may spot groups of dolphins frolicking in the bay, sea turtles’ hatching grounds and possibly the highly endangered coconut crab. By day, you can take a 1-hour hike to a nearby waterfall and beautiful rivers that are home to many birds and butterflies. From the island, many diving and snorkelling opportunities are available, too.

The two bungalows are set just 80 metres from the beach and 500 metres between each other, with a traditional design made from stones, coconut wood and bamboo. They both are very spacious, including two simple bedrooms that blend with the natural surroundings. Bungalow two has a deck with a lovely view of the beach and forest where food is also served.
