Maringi Sumba, Sumba Island

This small eco-resort is a great opportunity to interact with local people, learn more about Sumba’s unique history and culture, and contribute to the island’s future. Maringi is the training HQ of the Sumba Hospitality Foundation and is staffed almost entirely by local students who are learning the skills required for a career in the hospitality business. 

Maringi is a wonderful project which hones these ambitious young peoples’ skills and provides a unique stay for guests. As well as experiencing the infectious enthusiasm and charm of the students, the resort also provides a peaceful retreat in a rural and remote setting, with 9 rooms across two categories; rustic bamboo pavilions and luxurious pool villas. You’re based just a 15-minute bike ride from the beach and a 30-minute drive from the airport, it’s an ideal place to begin your exploration of Sumba and arm yourself with some local knowledge before going further afield. There are plenty of activities available from treks into the surrounding countryside to pampering spa treatments to immersive cultural experiences.  

Less than 50% of children finish primary school in Sumba and employment opportunities are limited. The Hospitality Foundation empowers local young people through training, education, and work experience to ensure their futures as the island develops into a tourist destination, while maintaining sustainable practices which preserve the local culture and encourage responsible tourism. Therefore, all in all, Maringi is a fantastic and well executed concept offering couples and families a one-off opportunity to learn more about Sumba and experience local hospitality in a unique and meaningful way.
