Villa Ma’rasai combines both the style of a small boutique hotel and a homestay, with a friendly, sleepy and casual atmosphere. The property is surrounded by pleasant gardens, clove and mustcat trees and mountain views, while a highlight is the beautifully furnished common areas.
Located 7km from the town, which is just a 15 minute drive, transport is required and can be provided by the hotel. The public areas are beautifully furnished with antiques and local artwork and pictures, making them a pleasant place to sit and relax, along with the pool area. The wifi is decent, and the restaurant cafe serves decent local dishes and seafood, though they do require some notice.
Rooms are comfortable, clean, a decent size and are fit with air conditioning and simple bathrooms. Some also have balconies and lovely ocean, mountain and garden views.
There is little to do in the evening aside from going out for a meal, which we recommend and though they do usually serve alcohol (beer), it is not a reliable source or cheap. English is quite limited amongst staff, and service is casual, though it still makes for a comfortable stay in Ternate.
Comfort - This is our lead in category. There will generally be a no frills approach and while some will be characterful, some will do exactly what it says on the tin - provide a clean, comfortable and good value place to spend the night. These places are normally 3* hotels.
