Mekong Kingdoms operate a fleet of small luxury boats on the famous Mekong River. Three boats offer day cruises around Luang Prabang while the other two sail the 2-3 day journey between Luang Prabang and the Thai border. Uniquely, unlike most other boats operating this journey, each of the boats has onboard accommodation, so there is no need to disembark to a riverbank lodge for overnight stays.
The Boheme boat consists of 13 suites, accommodating up to 26 passengers at a time, and is fitted with a sundeck with loungers, alfresco bar, wine cellar and spa treatment rooms. As for the Gypsy boat, it has a mere two cabins, so can be taken privately, a superb way to soak in the tranquillity of the region. Gypsy is fitted with a sun deck, bar lounge and dining room.
On both boats, you’ll be taken care of by excellent staff as you meander through the dramatic gorges and beautiful scenery (3 days/2 nights if travelling downstream and 4 days/3 nights upstream), and stops are made to explore the countryside and to take in local village life.
Expect high-quality service, dining, experiences and accommodation on boat boats. Morning yoga, spa treatments and cooking classes are available too. At the lovely dining, bar and lounge areas, you will be served delicious meals and drinks, mainly consisting of traditional Lao dishes with a modern twist.
Immaculate suites on the Boheme boat include floor-to-ceiling windows leading out to balconies, opulent bedding, air conditioning and wooden flooring and furnishings. Equipped with luxurious amenities and charming touches, you’ll feel very comfortable on the Boheme. On the Gypsy, the two ultra-exclusive cabins feature similar facilities and artistic style. However, they also have a dining and living area and are available as either doubles or twins.
This memorable experience does come at a price but is by far the most luxurious and intimate way to explore the upper reaches of the Mekong.
Luxury - Luxury hotels would have a superb level of service, very comfortable and usually spacious bedrooms, excellent food, great design and character. For us, when we visited, these places all had the 'wow factor'. A luxury hotel should satisfy the criteria of the most discerning clients.
