Info : Penang Heritage Highlights
Georgetown was a haven for safe shelter in between two formidable monsoon weather systems. The now UNESCO World Heritage listed city has a melting pot feel to it, thanks to the regional influences of the merchants who took harbour there. Chinese, Indian and British culture can be seen, heard and savoured here, often side-by-side in beautiful contrast.
This full-day walking tour explores the Chinese clan houses and covers the fascinating streets and quarters. Catch the sparkling flash of a sari as you admire a grand British colonial façade, or take a piece of Bengali bread with your morning coffee. Your guide will be happy to regale you with stories and observations about the local crowds, traditions and peculiarities.
The tour is full of surprises, where modern street art initiatives meet 18th century monuments and people still practise age-old artisan trades in the fresh air. As well as the Street of Harmony, Little India and Khoo Khongsi, you’ll visit the old wet market and haggle with the hawkers. Leave some room for the delicious local snacks.
