3.5 hours upstream from Bagan, sleepy Yandabo (where the Treaty of Yandabo was signed to end the first Anglo-Burmese war) is an interesting riverside pottery village, a good place to break overnight if you are travelling along the Irrawaddy en route to Mandalay. With your guide you’ll explore the local craft workshops and rural village life, in nearby Pan No the community harness over a thousand water buffalo to cultivate the land.

My favourite [guide] was Aung in Mandalay. We only had him for one day, but he was determined to show us as much of Mandalay as possible in the time allotted, was obviously very proud of his city and country and was a pleasure to be with. He even took us to meet his uncle who was the Abbott of one of the many monasteries.
