This holiday includes most of Myanmar's main sites, with a few unique twists. Beyond the glittering temples, welcoming culture, and superb scenery of Yangon, Bagan, and Mandalay, this holiday takes you off-the-beaten-track. Departing from Kalaw, you'll traverse the remote hills, stopping to explore local villages before continuing onwards by foot to one of the country's must-sees, Lake Inle.

Highlights include

  • Discovering the city of Yangon on a unique ETG Signature Tour. Golden stupas, colonial relics, and bustling local markets
  • Watch the sunrise at U Bein Bridge before the crowds arrive - a picture-postcard scene
  • Explore the sleepy colonial hill station of Kalaw by bike and visit the Green Hill Elephant Camp
  • A rewarding 3-day trek through the hills from Kalaw towards Lake Inle

As with all of our suggested itineraries, we can tailor-make your holiday to suit your budget, style and expectations. Talk to us today.

DAY 1  DEPART THE UK

Depart the UK and fly via Bangkok to Yangon.

DAYs 2 & 3  YANGON   an insight into local Burmese life

On arrival in Yangon, meet your local guide. There will be plenty of free time to relax and also to explore the colonial heart of the city with your guide. During your stay, you'll have the chance to see Yangon aboard the local circle train; a fun way to get a little insight into local Burmese life.

DAY 4-6  BAGAN   incredible temples & pagoda's

After a short flight to Bagan, your guide will meet you for the transfer to your hotel. During your time here, you will explore the temples and pagodas with your guide; the complex is one of the most spectacular archaeological sites in Asia. There will also be a chance to visit the Nyaung U Market - full of great photo opportunities - and to take a boat across the Irrawaddy to the island of Kyun Thiri where you can enjoy a morning visit to the local monastery.

Day 7-9 Mandalay  riverside villages and Buddhist heritage

Next, it's on to Mandalay - just a short 30-minute flight. Here you'll spend three days exploring a variety of fascinating sights with your guide. These include riverside villages like Ava, Sagaing and Mingun, reached by boat and home to some excellent historical sites.  You'll explore Mandalay itself, taking in its Buddhist heritage, watching artisans at work and visiting Mandalay Hill for a fantastic sunset vista across the city.  There will also be a sunrise visit to the famous U Bein Bridge.  Most people visit at sunset, which means dawn is the best way to enjoy the picture-postcard scene with fewer crowds.

DAY 10 & 14 KALAW to lake inle    scenery and trekking

From Mandalay, it's a short flight to Heho Airport followed by a road transfer to the hill station of Kalaw, a sleepy market town with a beautiful mountainous backdrop.

You'll have a couple of days in Kalaw to explore on foot by yourselves and also on a bicycle tour.  And there'll be a guided tour to the Green Hill Elephant Camp - a great example of responsible tourism in action. Then you'll leave Kalaw by foot on your three-day guided trekking adventure. Weaving through the hills past glorious mountain scenery, you'll meet villagers and enjoy meals and hospitality in their local communities.

The trek will lead you to Lake Inle, one of the country's must-see sites with its picturesque lakeside towns, wildlife and famous rotating market.

Day 15 & 16 Lake Inle     daily life on the lake

During your stay at Lake Inle, you'll take a boat trip to explore the rotating market and some of the notable lakeside towns. You'll also enjoy a sunset canoe trip on Inle and make a visit to a private house for a Burmese cooking lesson and to sample some local wine.

day 17 Yangon    exploring the Shwedagon pagoda

You'll return to Yangon for the last day and night before you fly home. The golden stupa of the Shwedagon Pagoda is one of the country's most famous sites and is a great place to spend your last afternoon, soaking up the atmosphere, marvelling at the views and reflecting on your holiday.

Day 18  fly home

Depart Burma for your flight back to the UK.
