If you're a curious and adventurous family, Myanmar could be an incredible destination for your next family holiday.

This holiday suggestion includes a range of activities including cycle rides through the jungle, train journeys and discovering captivating peaceful Buddhist temple. There are lovely sandy beaches and excellent hotels (with swimming pools) along the way. This suggested itinerary is a “Classic” Myanmar trip with all the main cultural highlights, perfectly interspersed with relaxation and some beach time at the end.

Highlights include:

  • Explore Lake Inle by canoe or a gentle cycle ride
  • Discover the magnificent temples of Bagan - remarkable enough to wow all ages
  • Explore a volcanic plug adjacent to Mount Popa, counting each step as you watch for rare birds and butterflies
  • Relax on the glorious beaches of Ngapali

As with all of our suggested itineraries, we can tailor-make your holiday to suit your budget, style and expectations. Find out about our exclusive ‘Journey Planner’ here.

DAY 1 DEPART THE UK

Depart the UK.

DAYs 2 & 3 YANGON   Explore the city by train and on foot

After an evening settling into your hotel, you will spend a day exploring the city with your guide, the pace of tour will be tailored to suit your family and the children's ages.

A fun way to get a sense of local life is by travelling aboard the cities Circle Train. You could follow this up with a walk along the Yangon River, a rickshaw ride and a visit to a local market and end the day trying out some delicious Burmese food.

DAYs 4 & 5 MOUNT POPA  Climbing and panoramas

Fly to Bagan and transfer by road to Mount Popa. The extinct volcanic peak of Mount Popa is one of Burma’s most revered pilgrimage sites. Located some 50 kilometres to the south-west of Bagan, the summit is believed to be home to some of the country’s most powerful spirits.  A climb to the top of the nearby volcanic plug of Popa Taung Kalat is worth the effort, the ascent is good fun, and the summit at 700 meters provides some spectacular panoramas of the surrounding countryside.

DAY 6 – 8 BAGAN  Temple fun

It's about two hours by road from Mount Popa to Bagan. During your stay, you’ll explore the pagodas of the extraordinary archaeological area on a guided bicycle tour (or by car if you prefer). You’ll take a horse and cart ride to a quiet spot for sunset, and after dark, you’ll explore one of the fascinating temples after most tourists have left.

There will also be time for a boat ride across the Irrawaddy to spend the morning with the friendly Buddhist monks and villagers of Kyun Thiri Island. You’ll pay a visit to the local monastery and spend the morning learning about the daily lives of this unique agricultural society, before heading back across the river to Bagan in time for lunch.

It's strange to say that almost no tourists visit this lovely spot, situated as it is, very close to Bagan.

DAY 9 – 11 LAKE INLE  Canoeing, cycling and more

It's a short flight from Bagan to Heho. From here, a scenic road trip takes you to your next destination. Stop en route to visit the Shwe Yan Pyay Monastery. When you arrive at the tranquil waters of Lake Inle, you will board a private boat for the last stage of your journey.

Burma’s second largest lake provides the stunning scenic backdrop to a range of excursions. A stunning visual spectacle, your adventure is filled with numerous unmissable photo opportunities including the lake’s remarkable floating gardens and its famous ‘one-legged’ fishermen. There is a chance to take a sunset canoe ride on the lake and visit Nyaung Shwe town for a genteel bike ride. Lying just to the north of Inle Lake, Nyaung Shwe sits amidst a relatively flat landscape that is ideal for exploring on two wheels.

day 12-15 ngapali  beach time

You’ll fly from Heho to Ngapali Beach, Burma’s beautiful Bay of Bengal-facing peninsula fringed with golden sandy beaches. Spend four days relaxing on the beach, splashing around in the pool and swimming in the azure ocean. If you fancy a bit of exploring, there are boat trips, watersports and small fishing villages to be discovered.

DAY 16 – YANGON  A final highlight

This morning you will transfer to the airport and fly to Yangon. Before leaving Myanmar, you’ll visit one of its most famous landmarks, the Shwedagon Pagoda. The recognisable golden stupa dominates Yangon’s skyline, and sunset is a great time to visit, the colours are lovely and a visit is a brilliant way to mark the end of your holiday adventure.

DAY 17 – FLY HOME

Transfer to Yangon airport for your flight home.

As every holiday is unique to you, prices vary. To give you an indication, our holidays typically cost between £4,000 and £6,000 per adult depending on trip length and time of year as well as the hotels and flights involved.
