Mawlamyine (formerly Moulmein), inspired both Rudyard Kipling and George Orwell and is a fascinating place where palm trees and meandering vines crawl amidst the crumbling mosques and distressed colonial buildings. With few visitors, accommodation is a little limited, and the Mawlamyaing Strand is about as good as it gets. It’s a standard hotel with spacious rooms and adequate facilities in the centre of the town. Don’t expect anything close to luxury, but do enjoy its fabulous riverside location. Take an afternoon stroll along the stupa-capped hills for amazing views of the town and the Salween River as it stretches out towards the Andaman Sea.
There are 47 superior rooms, six royal deluxe rooms and four deluxe rooms. They are sparsely decorated but certainly spacious, functional and clean. The rooms all feature clean private bathrooms, but by no means modern or luxurious.
Comfort - This is our lead in category. There will generally be a no frills approach and while some will be characterful, some will do exactly what it says on the tin - provide a clean, comfortable and good value place to spend the night. These places are normally 3* hotels.
