Polonnaruwa was the second capital of Sri Lanka, from the 11th - 13th Century. Unlike in the first capital, Anuradhapura which is mainly composed of Buddhist religious sites, here you'll find the remains of multi-storey palaces, royal pavilions and bathing ponds complete with changing rooms - all standing testament to the luxurious lifestyle of the royalty - alongside Buddhist and Hindu temples with flawless craftsmanship and artistry.
Polonnaruwa is a unique city of lakes and historic sites located fairly close together, which makes it a great place to experience on a bicycle. You can weave around from ponds to temples, marvelling at the wonders built a 1000 years ago and taking in the landscape with the wind in your hair. It’s a great opportunity to experience local life too. Stop at the roadside for a refreshing ‘king coconut’ or even a yummy snack of ‘pol roti’ hot off the hearth!
