Day-to-Day Itinerary : Northern Explorers: A Small Group Adventure

Depart the UK for Colombo, Sri Lanka.

You will be met at the airport and transferred to a nearby hotel where you will be for an overnight stay. Meet your specialist group tour guide at a welcome dinner and become acquainted with the rest of the group too.

Transfer to The Mudhouse, where you will be for two nights on a full board basis. This little-visited but beautiful area of Sri Lanka is deeply rural and life moves at a tranquil pace. Located in the heart of Sri Lanka's “dry zone”, it is characterised by startling rock formations and scattered “tanks” – village reservoirs that have provided the water for local agriculture for thousands of years and continue to do so today. The warm and friendly hospitality of the staff complements the rustic charm of The Mudhouse's design. You’ll have two days here to relax into Sri Lanka and enjoy the many excursions and activities offered.

From here your guide will take you north to your next stop, located just on the edge of Wilpattu National Park. From the comfort of a luxury tented campsite, you can make the most of this often overlooked portion of Sri Lanka. Wilpattu is Sri Lanka’s largest national park, boasting elephants, leopards and crocodiles to name but a few. It offers just as good sightings as its more famous sibling, Yala, whilst having a fraction of the number of visitors – allowing you the chance to really experience the wilderness on safari.

After your morning safari in Wilpattu National Park, head north towards the Mannar peninsular, stopping at the stunningly isolated monastery of Tantirimalee en route. Your home for the night is a simple house in the village of Pesalai. Although basic, Abode Hibernation will provide you with a wonderful insight into the way of life and cultural heritage of this Christian Tamil part of the island. Enjoy exploring this unique area, getting to know the locals and eating fresh fish on deserted beaches. Do be warned that the accommodation and facilities are basic, but the whole point of your stay here is to embrace and experience the local way of life with your charming and fascinating guide.

Hop on a local train from Mannar and enjoy a beautiful journey through the countryside up to Sri Lanka’s northernmost city, Jaffna. Surrounded by the Indian Ocean and the Jaffna lagoon, this part of the country is a wonderful place to explore. Your hotel is in the heart of the town and offers a comfortable and convenient location from which to discover this stunning peninsula.  Only opened up to tourists in recent years, Jaffna is a melting pot of cultures, religions and cuisines. Take a walk along the battered ramparts of Jaffna Fort, sneak a peek into a Hindu temple and light a candle at the Cathedral. Let the hubbub of Jaffna market envelop you, then visit a local home to see palmyrah being made. With a distinctive culture all of its own, it is sure to leave you enchanted.

Heading back south, along the eastern coast of Sri Lanka, you will get the opportunity to take in some of the island's most recent history in detail – this was the area heavily involved in the Sri Lankan Civil War. This is a place for sombre reflection as it is a heartbreakingly sad place to visit.  The drive from Jaffna to Trincomalee also passes through breathtaking scenery and some prime areas for birdwatching. Your base for the next few days is Anilana Nilaveli, a gorgeous hotel situated on a secluded beach near to Trincomalee. Spend the next few days relaxing by the pool, on the beach, or exploring Trincomalee town with its rich history.

As you begin to make your way slowly back towards Colombo on the west coast, we will break the journey with a magical stay at Green Paradise. An eco hideaway set in acres of jungle and surrounded by the beautiful Kandalama hills, this is the perfect spot to rest and relax in solitude on your last day.

Depart early morning for the airport and your onward flight home.
