Day-to-Day Itinerary : A Taste of Tea and Cinnamon

Direct overnight flight from London to Colombo with Sri Lankan Airlines. Indirect flights also possible from regional airports.

Days 2 - 5 BENTOTA

On arrival you will be met by your private driver and transferred down to your first destination – the wide and beautiful beaches of Bentota. Checking in to your hotel, Club Villa, you have a few days to relax and enjoy the beach and gorgoues hotel. The food at this Geoffrey Bawa designed hotel is superb and the service laid back.

Whilst here, take a trip inland to see Lunuganga, the late Geoffrey Bawa's lifelong project which has now been preserved as a hotel. There is also a chance to visit his brother's - the famous landscaper Bevis Bawa - beautiful Brief Garden. The colourful inland scenery of Sri Lanka's tropical heartland is stunning.

Transfer with your driver to Mirissa Hills, the beautiful villa complex designed in honour of Sri Lanka’s gift to the world: cinnamon. The setting is unbelievable and you might want to take in your surroundings, explore nearby Weligama or enjoy an evening drink at Mirissa, one of Sri Lanka’s prettiest bays.

During your stay, take a personal walking tour around the Unesco World Heritage site of Galle Fort. Avoid the heat of the mid-day sun and the guide will bring this wonderful walled area alive with tradition. Also take a visit to the Hundungoda Tea Estate where they make the famous 'Virgin White Tea' Learn about the traditional methods still used today and explore the estate at leisure. Be sure to enjoy the tea tasting at the end! Round your day off with an evening boat cruise on Koggala Lake - sundowners and snacks included.

Days 9 & 10 HAPUTHALE

Your chauffeur/guide will pick you up this morning and drive you from Mirissa up into the central mountains around Haputhale. On route a stop can be arranged at Uda Wallawe National Park.

After an evening of relaxing into your home for the next two nights, Kelburne Estate Cottages, follows a full day of activity – walking up to Lipton’s Seat – said to be Thomas Lipton’s (of Lipton’s Tea) favourite view point. The views are certainly incredible. On the way down visit Dambatenne  - his old tea factory which still works with very similar set up and machinery. In the afternoon, take a trip to Ella to enjoy the peaceful scenery, waterfalls and quite possibly, some more tea!

Days 11 & 12 TEA COUNTRY

Transfer from Haputhale to Hatton by train. The journey is slow and sedate but the scenery is spectacular. Your chauffeur/guide will transfer the luggage by road. The Tea Trails bungalows are you next destination - four converted tea estate manager's bungalows now a magnificent hotel.

Your time here is free to explore locally. There are trails through the hills between the various bungalows and you are free to eat or drink at any of them. The food is wonderful and the views are magnificent. You may choose to take the Tea Trails tea tour or some of the more adventurous activities, but we'd recommend relaxing and taking in the ambience.

Leave this morning for the scenic  journey out of the hills to Colombo.

In the evening, we have included a brilliant walking tour – which gives a unique flavour and insight into this chaotic but venerable old city.

Overnight in one of Colombo's best small hotels, the Park Street - in the heart of 'Cinnamon Gardens', Colombo's best address!

Transfer to the airport for your flight home.

Customer Feedback
It was clear that Nick was immensely knowledgeable about Sri Lanka and we felt his overall service to assist in identifying the type of holiday we required was superb. All places we stayed in were brilliant but, for novelty value, the Mudhouse was one of the most memorable. From pick-up to departure we can only say that out guide and driver was absolutely magnificent. Always helpful, smiling, knowledgeable we became good friends over the two weeks.
