Just 10 minutes from Jaffna town, Fox Jaffna was originally
a family home built in the early 1900s but now serves as a comfortable base to
explore the fascinating region.
Like many houses of the era, Fox Jaffna's entrance opens up
to a courtyard centred around a pond, and its four Heritage Rooms can be
accessed from here. The other 24 rooms are in the Deluxe category and were
built more recently among the gardens at the rear of the property, where you'll
also find the restaurant and swimming pool. Although less traditional in style,
we'd recommend these more modern rooms to avoid hearing the comings and goings
of fellow guests.
In addition to its charming garden area and swimming pool, Fox Jaffna has another surprising feature. During the Civil War, many bunkers were constructed around the area. Most of these bunkers were destroyed by government order, but there are still two under the house, which have now been transformed into a small art gallery and museum. The photos and artefacts are not just a sobering reminder of the area's history but also a showcase of Jaffna's cultural history and artistic style, and bunkers are well worth a visit during your stay.
The combination of comfortable rooms and excellent
facilities, a convenient location, and the intriguing bunkers make Fox Jaffna
an excellent spot to stay while learning about the Jaffna region.
Superior - This is what we would describe as our standard category. These will be decent 3/4* hotels providing a really good level of service. We would generally expect them to be providing a little something extra, in terms of character, guest experience or facilities too.
