Kelburne Estate Cottages, Haputale
Sri Lanka, Hill Country

Info : Kelburne Estate Cottages

The Kelburne Bungalows have been a well kept Sri Lankan secret since 1981. Slowly, the world is discovering the wonderful laid back charm of these three cottages perched on a hill near Haputale, where the land falls away 1000m to the plains below. Finding rooms available here is a now a bit of a challenge!

The views from Kelburne seem out of this world. There is no other way of describing how majestic they are, especially in the clear light at sunrise. The service is warm and friendly from Vijay, Sedera, Stanley the cook and the rest. The cottages themselves are great value and have a comfortable, functional feel with stuffed sofas and magazines to while away the evenings. There are two bedrooms in one of the cottages (Aerie) and three in the other two (Wildflower and Rose).

There is a lovely mix here of formality; supper is served on lovely wooden tables in spacious dinning rooms; and laid back comfort as you lounge in the garden. There is a wonderful spot for a group breakfast outside. The emphasis is on comfort rather then luxury.

Addisham Monastary is nearby as well as the stiff climb to the Liptons Seat viewpoint, high up on the rolling tea covered mountains. Most of the attractions of the Hill Country can be visited easily from here, including the hill stations of Nuwara Eliya and Bandarawella, the national parks at Horton Plains and Uda Walawe and various thundering waterfalls are also accessible.

The cottages are rented out in their entirety but work well for one couple, a family or a group of friends. Several people have rented the entire place and got married in one the most wonderful settings imaginable, with friends and family invited along.

Superior - This is what we would describe as our standard category. These will be decent 3/4* hotels providing a really good level of service. We would generally expect them to be providing a little something extra, in terms of character, guest experience or facilities too.

Guest Comments for Kelburne Estate Cottages

The children loved the badminton and spent a day playing cricket with the staff - a very special place.

Kelburne Estate was absolutely jaw-droppingly fantastic...brilliant views, top class service and lovely food with a very colonial atmosphere...almost the top highlight of the whole holiday.

Loved meeting the tea pluckers and the estate managers. I had no idea it was in the middle of a working estate.

Wildflower cottage at Kelbourne Estate cottages was just lovely and Ravi and Stanley were perfect hosts with wonderful food and discreet service.

Absolutely incredible setting with unbelievable views. Staff very friendly, but we felt a little embarrassed about the post-colonial feel, e.g. the bell to call the house boy.

A wonderful place - wish we had spent two nights there. More outstanding views and brilliant service and food.

‘Kelburne was great to have space to socialise in our own house at night’

Superb views. To see the clouds clear and reveal the valley below was breath-taking. Food was good. A great location.

All hotels exceeded expectations especially Villa Victoria and Kelborne Cottages which we absolutely loved. The service at both was out of this world as was the food. Also, at both, the locations were unbeatable.

Kelburne Estate: great situation good service and wacky.

Aerie Cottage, Kelburne mountain view was just heaven! A lovely welcome by the staff. We walked through the immaculately kept gardens to the patio overlooking the mountain. The view was just breathtaking! Loved the cottage and Ravi, who looked after us so well, was a gem!

We also thought the staff at Kelburne were wonderful, as was the scenery.

Kelbourne we LOVED the view; it has to be seen to be believed
