Sri Lanka, Kandy and Around
Info : Mowbrey House
In picturesque Lower Mowbray, Mowbrey House backs onto a stunning tea plantation and acres of beautiful gardens, olive groves, and fruit plantations. This charming and intimate boutique hotel is relatively new on the scene, offering the perfect backdrop for relaxing and enjoying pleasant days and cool evenings at a higher altitude.
In contrast to Colombo, the city of Kandy offers visitors a pleasant climate change: the urban bustle and busy market vibe are still there, but higher altitudes give significant relief from the stifling heat, as well as some spectacular mountain mists. Kandy’s history is rich and full, dating back to its time as a Sinhalese kingdom. Nearby, there are countless rolling tea plantations, gardens, temples, museums, and the magnificent Knuckles Range just waiting to be explored. Lower Mowbray is just a short drive away, and Mowbrey House is a wonderful base for exploring the region.
This intimate villa offers two suites (the master suite and the studio suite) and two bedrooms only, all with spectacular views of the lush green surroundings. Alternatively, you can rent out the entire place. Recreational facilities include a putting green and a rifle range, and you can take cooking classes on-site in the Spice Garden. There are maps given for local walking trails too.
Mowbrey House is a charming and pleasant resort with a friendly guest house feel – the track leading to the hotel is not always easy to navigate, which means it really is off the beaten track. If you’d rather be close to the city sights in Kandy, you might prefer the convenience of staying somewhere a bit more accessible. However, for anyone seeking a peaceful retreat in a truly beautiful part of Sri Lanka, Mowbrey House is a great choice.
Superior - This is what we would describe as our standard category. These will be decent 3/4* hotels providing a really good level of service. We would generally expect them to be providing a little something extra, in terms of character, guest experience or facilities too.
Most of them were superb and we had requested quiet rooms with sea/lake views where possible. Harriet had arranged this for us and her hard work paid of as they were all granted.
