Sri Lanka, The Deep South
Info : Portofino
Portofino (formerly Ranna 212) is a modern and vibrant hotel offering a great escape from the hustle and bustle of urban life. Found to the east of Tangalle, near a village called Ranna, this hotel is situated on a 12 acres site neighbouring a beautiful, deserted beach characteristic of the deep south of Sri Lanka.
It is a stylish hotel, with a total of 54 rooms, split into two categories Deluxe and Suite. Each room is light and bright, exceptionally spacious, and decorated in tasteful sophisticated furnishings with bright pops of vibrant colour. The en suite bathrooms are equally as large with both polished concrete bathtubs and showers. Suite rooms are slightly larger than Deluxe rooms, with the addition of a lounge area, perfect for families looking for that little bit extra space. Wheelchair accessible rooms are also available.
The hotel is home to two separate large pools, one of which is more suitable for children. Also available is a volley ball court, bike rental station, non-motorised beach water sports, a spa and yoga centre. The property opens up to a beautiful secluded beach, which is renowned for its excellent swimming from the months of December to March. A hotel lifeguard is present during day time hours.
With two restaurants and two bars, including a beach barbeque area called Flame, this hotel offers a wide range of food and refreshments. Alternatively there are plenty of local dining options a short tuk-tuk ride away.
From the hotel, guests can explore the delights of Yala National park, Kalametiya bird Sanctuary, and neighbouring Tangalle.
Deluxe - This is our first really 'upmarket' category. It might be a beautiful tiny hotel with very limited facilities or a 5* resort hotel with all the trimmings; but any hotel in this category will be a well-run establishment with very comfortable rooms, a strong service ethos and excellent food.

It was a fantastic holiday. Sri Lanka, Experience travel and the wonderful Harriet have all been praised to the skies many times over! We had a massive party when we got back and about 150 people wanted to know how we found the place!! The answer was that I had spoken to nearly a dozen agents before finally speaking to someone who asked ME lots of questions, ie properly interested in what we would like rather than trying to quickly field a product. Knowledgable, patient, helpful and 'real'!
