Sri Lanka, Hill Country
Info : Rawana’s Secret,
Set in an isolated rural location, 45 minutes drive from Ella in Sri Lanka’s hills, Rawana’s Secret offers a unique chance to explore the country’s beautiful scenery and nature, as well as authentic interaction with the local community.
The location is breathtaking, perched almost directly over the infamous Rawana’s Falls providing views right across the plains below and hills comprising Ella Gap. Despite its isolated location from major towns, Rawana’s Secret is situated right in the centre of a small agricultural micro-region, providing the freshest fruit, vegetables and rice for your meals. The food here really is mind-blowing, and served with a shy smile by the ladies from the local village.
The ‘hotel’ comprises of 5 rooms in total, with two in Heart Lodge and another in Club Cottage, both buildings set above the falls, enabling the best view for miles around. The last two bedrooms are in a further building set a little around the hillside, The White House, which enjoys views across the local agricultural small holdings and rice paddies. All rooms are simply furnished with colonial-style beds and en-suites, and although incredibly comfortable, the focus here is much more on the outside, natural environment. Wraparound balconies in all room types make the most of this.
A stay here is far more focussed on your experience rather than on fancy tap fittings, with walks galore to waterfalls and viewpoints, as well as opportunities to get involved with the local community, you can even use your own skill set to help some of the country’s most impoverished people.
Comfort - This is our lead in category. There will generally be a no frills approach and while some will be characterful, some will do exactly what it says on the tin - provide a clean, comfortable and good value place to spend the night. These places are normally 3* hotels.
Just a quick line to say a big 'thank you' for all your work in putting our trip to Sri Lanka together. Everything worked exactly as it should have - even the train from Kandy to Hatton was on time!
