Info : Talaramba Reef
Nestled on the beachfront between Galle and Tangalle, Mirissa is a popular destination for sun soaking and swimming. Just off the main road lies Taralamba Reef, a classy two villa retreat with particularly beautiful grounds and a superb location. Talaramba Reef is very peaceful: it really is just you and the sound of the ocean. Come here with your whole family or a large group of friends to eat well, watch out for visiting peacocks, take a dip, see the whales and relax.
The entrance gate opens up into an enormous garden, and you’ll find two spacious villas, each with their own swimming pool. The reef that surrounds the property is, well, rocky and therefore not suitable for bathing. A short walk will lead you to a great stretch of beach for swimming.
The villas (Vathura and Sulanga) feature four bedrooms each, and are furnished identically. All rooms are open, bright and spacious with four poster beds, ensuite bathrooms, air conditioning and wide balconies. Local Sri Lankan art lines the walls and much of the décor is locally produced.
Take heed, the toilets in the bathrooms at Talaramba Reef don’t have doors, and although privacy is not compromised, some guests find it off-putting. All in all, Talaramba Reef is homely and welcome, a particularly great choice for families travelling with children. The hospitality there is a real treat, the food is wonderful and there isn’t much to criticise. The location, great facilities and special touches provided by the staff will render your visit unforgettable.
Villa - The 'Villa' is a similar concept to the 'holiday home' in Europe, with some key differences. Our villas in Asia are always fully staffed with cooking and service provided for you. Staff will generally cook meals to your specification and purchase food and drink for you at cost price. They are generally pretty smart and luxurious too and feel in many ways like a small private hotel. Nonetheless, your villa is still effectively a home and therefore you cannot expect the same level of training, English speaking or slickness that you might expect from a hotel at a similar cost. As the owners are not generally holiday professionals we cannot guarantee the quality of a villa matches expectations in a way we can with hotels. That said, the personal local touch means villas are generally much more friendly and interactive than hotels and have much to recommend them. The privacy and space makes them wonderful for families, groups of friends or couples looking for privacy and relaxation.
‘Our driver/guide Chandarma’s knowledge of the archaeology and wildlife, which we were especially interested in, was excellent.’
