River Resort, Kithugalla Sri Lanka, Hill Country
The River Resort is a great value four bedroom hotel hidden away in the lush hills around Kithulgala. A twenty minute drive on windy country roads from Kithulgala town, it is a great place to sit back and relax and enjoy the fertile landscape of the wetlands as the river flows past your balcony. For the active there are many walks in the jungles and plantations which border the hotel - the staff will help you plan a route to suit. The main attraction is white water rafting on the Kelani River which runs through Kithulgala itself. There are also caves in the area, an ancient temple and plenty of flora and fauna.
The hotel is eco friendly and has a great fresh-water swimming pool which overlooks the river as it flows over the rocks. Electricity is hydro-generated. The rooms are large and cozy, with excellent, spacious bathrooms. All rooms come with mini-bar and lounge furniture and log fireplaces in case it gets chilly in the night. There is an eclectic mix of artwork, books and furnishings around the hotel. A tastefully designed restaurant also overlooks the river and serves a variety of reasonably priced dishes. Sofas and cushioned chairs are spread around the lounge area which also has a piano. The staff are friendly and hospitable and the atmosphere of the hotel in general is extremely relaxing.
The River Resort is ideal for families or couples. Perfect for energetic types who want to explore the diverse and fertile regions of the wetzone. The River Resort is within three hours drive of Colombo and can be built into an itinerary on the way to or from the 'Hill Country'.

Eco/Adventure - This category covers gorgeous lodges in the jungle, comfortable safari camps and dreamy, but simple, beach cabanas. These places defy conventional categorisation: what is communing with nature to one person may be terrifying bugs to another! Many of these places are very comfortable and the service generally of a very high level - but please read the website review carefully and/or talk to us and be sure to have understood what you are letting yourselves in for!

River resort - simply unbelievable. I loved it. We had great service. The arrangement of only having one night there worked really well by the way. Borderlands have a really interesting setup for the White Water Rafting and canyoning. Owned by a Canadian who had lunch with us. Lovely chill-out area (where they normally entertain 'team building' groups) and an enthusiastic bunch of guides. Finished quite late so it was handy to be at the Plantation rather than have to drive back up to River Resort. I thought the Plantation was fantastic too.
