A former fully functioning tea factory, this was the first hotel to use Sri Lanka's main export industry as a tourism concept. Originally a highly successful factory during the British era, the factory fell into decline in the 1980's and 1990's as it failed to adapt to changing needs of this competitive industry.

Located on the outskirts of Nuwara Eliya, much of the factory's original layout had been restored and modified to suit the needs of contemporary travellers. Now accommodating 57 well appointed rooms, the hotel also has a spa, business centre and two restaurants. It has its own mini golf course and also organises horse riding excursions in the estates. Golf can be played more seriously on the 18 hole course in Nuwara Eliya.

Located at high altitude in the misty mountains, guests are often treated to an assortment of weather conditions during a stay here - from mysterious mist to glorious sunshine. The estates around the factory provide many a picture postcard image of Sri Lanka. Rooms at the front of the hotel look out across the beautiful tea plantations and rolling hills whilst the rooms at the rear look out across the local village and into yet more tea!

Opened in 1996 to much fanfare, the hotel has faded somewhat in comparison to its then unrivalled luxury in the region. It is still an interesting place to stay - and the museum documenting the transformation from derelict factory to modern hotel contains some fascinating information. The rooms are fitted out to a standard that you would expect of any international quality hotel. Travellers interested in the concept but looking for luxurious accommodation may prefer the spectacular Tea Trails bungalows on the western side of the highlands.
