Sri Lanka, Puttalam & The North West
Info : Udekki, Alankuda
Located just 12 km south of Kalpitya on the North West coast of Sri Lanka, Udekki offers the winning combination of laid back, rustic charm and comfort. The homely feel of this beautiful beach resort will put guests in just the right state of mind for relaxation.
With whitewashed walls, polished concrete floors and vibrant swathes of colour the décor is an eclectic, but pleasing, mixture of Middle Eastern, Indian and Sri Lankan styles. Rooms are spread out over five separate villas and lofts. Villa 343 and 346 can be rented out as whole villas, with the option of self-catering, whilst Villa 349, Loft D and M are rented on individual room basis. The Villa rooms overlook the stunning H-shaped swimming pool, whilst the newer loft rooms have views over the Indian Ocean. Each Villa has its own private courtyard and veranda, and Villa 346 has outdoor ‘his and hers’ bathtubs. Please note that whilst all rooms have a ceiling fan, not all have air conditioning.
Guests can choose between a mixture of traditional Sri Lankan food and Western classics either at the hotel’s restaurant and bar, the Vodka house, or on the privacy of their own roof top terrace. The sea food is particularly good in this part of the country. For those looking for adventure, Udekki has two hotel boats which are perfect for exploring the fantastic marine wildlife this part of the world has to offer; in particular dolphins and whales. Snorkelling, wind surfing, kite surfing, canoeing and sailing are also available in nearby Kalpitya. For guest who prefer to stay on solid ground the beautiful Wilpattu national Park is only 1 ½ hours’ drive away, in which you can discover Sri Lanka’s famous wild leopards, sloth bears, elephants and bird life.
Ayurvedic therapies and Aromatherapy massages are also available within the hotel grounds. Finally, as Udekki is run by the famous blues musician Glen Terry, you may even be treated to a spontaneous private concert to make your stay unforgettable. On the other hand - he may be off touring!
We’d say this resort is ideal for younger people and those young at heart, looking for adventure. It is not ideal for those looking for a conventional beach resort environment – the laid back vibe and off the beaten track location means that it is a very different experience from a run of the mill beach resort.
Eco/Adventure - This category covers gorgeous lodges in the jungle, comfortable safari camps and dreamy, but simple, beach cabanas. These places defy conventional categorisation: what is communing with nature to one person may be terrifying bugs to another! Many of these places are very comfortable and the service generally of a very high level - but please read the website review carefully and/or talk to us and be sure to have understood what you are letting yourselves in for!

We called Harriet in the UK and asked to move to a hotel with more facilities or closer to town. Our request was relayed through Colombo to the manager and resulted in a visit from the owner asking how he could make our stay better.
