The Spirit of Sri Lanka

ETG Adventure Powered by Pioneering Women

Explore Sri Lanka on this 15-day journey, from her ancient temples to her vibrant rural communities, through the eyes of the remarkable women who live here. Each female guide is dedicated to preserving the island's cultural heritage, supporting sustainability initiatives, and championing other pioneering women.

You'll
venture off the beaten path to feel the island's true essence: soaking in breathtaking landscapes, connecting with local communities, and uncovering unique stories.

Highlights include:

  • Hiking the Pekoe Trail with the route's first-ever female guide, Thushni (a great friend of ours).

  • Marvelling at ancient rock temples and frescoes in the Pilikuttuwa and Dambulla cave complexes with a female archaeologist.

  • Experiencing authentic Sri Lankan life at hotels run by inspiring women: from Amba Yaala to Why House.

This is a sample itinerary which we will tailor to suit you. Prices are dependent on destination, flights & dates but ETG holidays always include the following:

  • International flights (if required)
  • Guides, drivers & their tips
  • Accommodation
  • Specified meals & snacks

Day 1: Depart the UK

Depart the UK on your flight to Sri Lanka.

Day 2: Arrival & Serenity in Gampaha

Your adventure begins in Sri Lanka's picturesque countryside, where you'll stay at a peaceful retreat perfect for unwinding after a long flight. Explore the Pilikuttuwa Cave Temple Complex, an extraordinary archaeological site with over 100 caves, ponds, and murals. Your guide, Prathini Samaradiwakara, a heritage interpreter and solo adventurer, will share insights into Sri Lanka's monastic and Buddhist culture. The tranquil forest and historic ambience make this an unusual and memorable introduction to the island.

Days 3–5: Cultural Immersion in Dambulla & Sigiriya

Then, it’s on to Amba Yaalu Kandalama: Sri Lanka’s first fully women-led hotel, dedicated to empowering women in the hospitality industry. Here, you’ll visit the Dambulla Rock Cave Temple, known for its remarkable Buddha statues and frescoes, and climb the celebrated Sigiriya Rock Fortress, where breathtaking views reward your efforts.

In the afternoon, set off on a bike ride through the serene countryside, before resting beside Pidurangala Rock and refuelling with local snacks. You'll also go on a cycling tour from Polonnaruwa to Giritale, ending at the Hamboo Gallery Café, where you’ll meet Kanchana and her all-female team who serve up delicious meals and showcase sustainable crafts.

Days 6–7: Kandy’s Charm & Community Connections

Next, you’ll travel to Villa Rosa: a villa-style hotel with unmatched views and a welcoming ambience. After settling in, get ready to explore. You’ll delve into rural life at Tamarind Gardens: a sustainable farm and community project led by Ayesha, who’ll guide you through daily farm activities and introduce you to local villagers.

In Kandy, immerse yourself in the city’s history with a walking tour, visiting the Royal Botanical Gardens, colonial landmarks, and the sacred Temple of the Tooth. You’ll also get the chance to try different local snacks at a scenic viewpoint. Kandy’s blend of colonial elegance and deep tradition makes for a fascinating visit.

Days 8–9: Tea Traditions & Hill Country Life in Ella

Hop aboard and take the legendary train journey to Ella, soaking up Sri Lanka’s epic hill country as you go. Arrive at AMBA Estate, a lovely farmstay famed for its artisanal teas. Here, you'll learn all about the intriguing history and production of tea, pluck your own leaves, and roll them into your very own batch with the help of AMBA’s experts. You'll also explore the estate's organic farm and delve into their sustainable practices.

Day 10: Spiritual Trekking & Transfer to Yala

It's time to set off on the Pekoe Trail 15: a serene trek through Ella’s lush landscapes led by a fantastic female guide. You'll walk between towering pine forests and ancient shrines, and admire the verdant views from Ella Rock. Wandering through little-visited villages and along the railway line means you'll leave with a deep connection to the island’s natural beauty. Afterwards, continue your journey to Kulu Safaris, where your next adventure awaits.

Days 10–11: Safari Adventure in Yala National Park

During your stay at Kulu Safaris, you'll experience Sri Lanka’s wilderness in style: staying in comfy tents, fully immersed in nature. You'll have the chance to set off on two safaris with a female naturalist guide, who'll explain all about Yala National Park’s diverse wildlife, and help you spot as many animals as possible: from leopards and elephants to exotic birds. This intimate and eco-conscious safari experience is likely to be a highlight of your trip.

Days 12–15: Coastal Bliss in Talpe

End your journey with a stay at Why House: a boutique villa near Galle with beautiful gardens, an oasis of a pool, and exceptional food run by the sociable Henrietta. Learn the art of the Sri Lankan cooking ladies from Hikkaduwa, who will teach you how to prepare a traditional rice and curry feast using aromatic spices. Visit the Rosy May Foundation, which empowers local women by training their skills in jewelry crafting, sewing, and cooking. Explore Galle Fort with your guide, discovering its colonial history, vibrant shops, and coastal charm. Spend your remaining days relaxing by the pool with your book, making the most of the villa’s serene setting before your flight home.
