Essential Rajasthan with the Taj Mahal

Our ‘Essential Rajasthan with the Taj’ itinerary idea takes in all the must-see sites of India’s Golden Triangle and beyond, such as Jaipur, Jodhpur and Udaipur. You’ll also experience a change of pace and a glimpse at an older, more rural Rajasthan with its impossibly romantic desert forts, dramatic scenery and wildlife.

We’ve suggested mixing opulent city hotels, perfect for escaping the clamour outside, with peacefully charming but quirky heritage properties in converted Rajput residences, used for entertaining visitors from time immemorial.

Highlights include:

  • Marvel at the timeless magnificence of the Taj Mahal, the disorderliness of Delhi and colourful Jaipur
  • Escape the madness into the gorgeous surrounds of Fort Barli and the Rajasthani countryside
  • Discover the Bishnoi people and their relationship with local wildlife, including the very rare Blackbuck Antelope
  • Stay on the banks of Lake Pichola in romantic and laid back Udaipur

For those with more time, we’d suggest slowing it down and spending a few more days exploring the countryside or relaxing in or just outside of Udaipur at the end of your holiday. All hotels are suggestions and will be adjusted to suit.

As with all of our suggested itineraries, we can tailor-make your holiday to suit your budget, style and expectations. Find out how it works with our exclusive ‘Journey Planner’ here.

DAY 1 DEPART THE UK

Depart and fly to Delhi.

DAY 2 Delhi

Arrive in Delhi and transfer to your hotel in the heart of New Delhi. In the afternoon you will take a short journey around New Delhi to ease into your trip. You'll visit some of the key sights but also visit a beautiful stepwell which is rarely visited. You'll round up with a drink at the famous United Coffee House.

DAY 3 Delhi

This morning, you'll visit Nizamuddin, a 14th-century village that feels predominantly urban with 20,000 residents in narrow lanes.  You'll walk around with a local guide from the hope project. Afterwards, you'll visit Khan market for some lunch. In the afternoon you'll take some time to relax at your hotel before being picked up again to take a fascinating street food tour of Old Delhi by cycle rickshaw.

DAY 4 Delhi to Agra

After breakfast, your chauffeur will arrive to drive you down the excellent new highway to Agra.

After lunch and checking in at your hotel you will be able to visit the Taj Mahal, the premier iconic site in the whole of India and deservedly so.

Day 5 Agra to Jaipur

This morning you’ll be driven to Jaipur, via a stop at the incredible ruined city of Fatehpur Sikri. This fairytale city in the desert is still in pristine condition, despite being wholly abandoned 100’s of years ago.

On from there to Jaipur, the ‘Pink City’ and the third point of the famous Indian ‘Golden Triangle’ of tourist sites. Check into your hotel, and there is time to relax or explore if you are keen.

 Day 6 Jaipur

Jaipur is a riot of colour, and as the capital of Rajasthan, it's a hectic place with buzzing spice markets and streets filled with multicoloured saris and rampaging rickshaw drivers. Today you’ll spend the day with a local guide exploring the city's Hindu and Mughal heritage and the many palaces and forts, home to intricate and exquisite Indian art and architecture, including the extraordinary Palace of the Winds.

Day 7 Jaipur to Fort Barli

A 3.5-hour drive this morning takes you deep into the Rajasthani countryside and towards Fort Barli. The rural location should be a very welcome respite from the hectic bustle of Delhi, Agra and Jaipur. The historic fort itself is now a hotel and will be your base here.

Day 8 Fort Barli

Your stay at Fort Barli will be like a home from home, and you will be well looked after. Use it as a place to relax or take part in some of the hotel experiences on offer. For example, trekking in the hills, walking around the local lake, interacting with the villagers, cycling around the countryside or visiting local ancient temples.

Day 9 Fort Barli to Rohet

You'll travel today towards Jodhpur and your base (40 miles outside) in a sleepy place called Rohet. It’s a popular stopover, and several famous writers are reputed to have found Rohet a great place to let their creative juices flow. It’s also the home of the Bishnoi people and the beautiful Blackbuck antelope.

Day 10 Jodhpur & Rohet

Today you will have a privately guided tour of Jodhpur (about 45 minutes' drive from Rohet), the second largest city in Rajasthan and nicknamed the "Blue City” after the many houses in the old town that are painted in various hues of blue. This incredible site is best seen from the imposing Mehrangarh Fort, the largest fort in Rajasthan, which looms over 100m above the city. There is time to stroll through the winding alleyways of the Old City and visit the numerous palaces, temples and havelis that are scattered throughout.

Back to Rohet for a relaxing later afternoon in blissful peace. You might like to do a cooking class here and enjoy the spoils afterwards.

Day 11 Rohet to Udaipur

A 4-hour journey takes you to the most romantic of cities in a state full of them: Udaipur, set on Lake Pichola. You’ll start your stay here with a boat trip across the lake to best view the famous Taj Palace Lake Hotel (you can stay here too if you wish of course).

Day 12 Udaipur

A full day exploring the sights and sounds of Udaipur, including the City Palace complex and the markets and bazaars of the old city.

Day 13-14 Udaipur to Mumbai

You'll wave goodbye to your chauffeur today and transfer to the airport for your morning flight to Mumbai. Arrive and check in before exploring India’s most modern city. On your full day, you'll take our exclusive 'transport tour' of Mumbai using an eclectic range of transport from the infamous black and yellow taxi, a local bus and the commuter railway!

Day 15 fly home (or stay!)

Today you'll transfer to the airport for your onward flight.
