Day-to-Day Itinerary : Family Vietnam Homestay Adventure

Day 1 – Depart the UK

Depart the UK.

Day 2 – Hanoi

You will be met by your guide when you arrive at the airport. You will then be transferred to your hotel in the heart of the city, where the rest of the day can be spent at leisure.

Day 3 – Hanoi

A unique tour of Hanoi that is designed specifically for families, the day begins amongst the interactive exhibits of the city’s remarkable Museum of Ethnology. After a chance for some pool time back at the hotel, you’ll then venture out again for a legendary chocolate buffet. A rickshaw ride through the streets and a traditional performance of Vietnamese water puppet theatre is then followed by the option of dinner at the famous Vietnamese fast food chain, Pho 24, before returning to the hotel.

In the evening you will experience a unique and traditionally Vietnamese performance art – water puppetry. Marvel at the craftsmanship of the colourful puppets and the skilful manoeuvring skills of the artists as they control the puppets behind a “water stage”.

Day 4 – Halong Bay

You will transfer to Halong Bay by road and board your junk boat that will take you out into the beautiful archipelago made up of 1969 islands that is famed for its picturesque ocean karst topography. Cruise past craggy peaks and small, beach-fringed islands and visit glittering stalactite caves. Dinner will be served on board where you can sit back, relax and watch the sun set behind the karst peaks of the bay.

Day 5 – Moon Garden Homestay

After visiting a small fishing village in the morning, you will return back to Halong Bay harbour and be met by your guide, then transferred back to Hanoi. Continue on to the fantastic Moon Garden homestay, about an hour outside of Hanoi. Enjoy some local herbal tea as you arrive, followed by a traditional, refreshing steam bath with fragrant herbs such as lemongrass, pomelo leaves and holy basil leaves. Watch the traditional evening worship of the Buddha, enjoy a freshly cooked dinner followed by a relaxing foot bath with ginger, salt, mugwort medicinal herbs and warm water which will help send you off into a deep sleep.

Day 6 – Moon Garden Homestay and Hoi An

Early risers today can join in the traditional Yijinjing exercises with the locals at around 7am. After breakfast, you can choose between a long or a short bicycle ride through the beautiful rural countryside, visiting temples, local homes, farmers’ fields and pagodas.  

When you return to the Moon Garden, there will be a cooking class where you can learn to make some Vietnamese delicacies. After lunch, enjoy a relaxing hand spa treatment, where your fingers will be dipped in a fragrant lime bowl followed by a traditional herbal hand massage. The rest of the afternoon is then yours for relaxing; sit in the garden hammocks, take some pictures with traditional Vietnamese cloths, chat with the locals or stroll around Ky Son village.

In the late afternoon transfer to the airport and fly to Hoi An.

Day 7 – Hoi An

Enjoy a full day at leisure relaxing at your beautiful ocean front hotel on the stunning beaches of Hoi An. Restaurants, cafes and markets are a short tuk-tuk or bike ride away for those wanting to explore.

Day 8 – Hoi An

Take a leisurely morning bicycle tour of Hoi An’s historic heart - the perfect way to explore this stunning UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the company of a local guide you will explore narrow streets lined with centuries-old houses, taking in a wealth of architectural styles and influences. You’ll visit the 400 year-old Japanese Bridge and get a chance to explore the fish market and the shops and galleries of this charming riverside town before returning to the hotel around midday.

Day 9 – Hoi An

Today is for relaxing on the beach at leisure.

Day 10 – Ho Chi Minh City

Transfer to Danang airport and fly to Ho Chi Minh City. Once you are settled into your centrally-located hotel, the rest of the day will be at leisure.

Day 11 – Ho Chi Minh City

This morning you will have a guided tour of Ho Chi Minh City including visits to the neo-Romanesque Notre Dame cathedral, the fascinating History Museum and the former Presidential Palace, where you can explore the underground communication tunnels.

After lunch you will head out of the city to visit the famous Cu Chi Tunnels, a vast underground network of tunnels used by the Vietcong during the American War.

Day 12 – Mekong Delta Homestay

Transfer into the lush green Mekong Delta region by road, where you will spend a full day exploring the palm-fringed waterways and local farm lands. Take a xe loi (cyclo) ride through the local village of Huu Dinh before boarding your boat and starting your trip through small canals with beautiful tropical scenery. Stop at a brick making shop, cruise through narrow canals and visit Mrs Huong, a local fish and shrimp farmer living on a fruit orchard with her three children and grandson. Stop and have tea with her before switching to bicycles to pedal past green gardens and local houses, including a local sampan boat building business and Mr Sau Tuong's home, a former Vietcong soldier who survived two years fighting the Khmer Rouge in Phnom Penh and now makes rice paper for a living.

In the early evening pick vegetables with a local family and help prepare and cook dinner with the ingredients you helped collect.

Day 13 – Ho Chi Minh City

Take a boat trip to the Tai Phu canal and stop to visit a coconut processing workshop before taking a bicycle to the busy local market of My Long. Next, cycle to Cau Hoa to visit the local Phuoc Long Tu temple and war memorials. You will then transfer back to Ho Chi Minh City where you will check-in to your hotel, freshen up and head out on an evening adventure around town at night on the back of your own private vintage vespas. A great chance to get off the tourist trail and discover something of Saigon’s authentic nightlife, your tour will take in the bustling streets of Chinatown and the clamour and chaos of District 4. You’ll also get a chance to sample some distinctive street food and some live music, before ending the evening with a game of bowling.

Day 14 – Fly Home

Transfer to the airport to catch your flight home.
