Luang Prabang, Laos
Luang Prabang is often referred to the jewel of South East Asia and for good reason: the effect of the ornate Buddhist temples and Indo-Chinese architecture is spellbinding. It lies wrapped around the confluence of the Khan and Mekong River, surrounding by green mountains and jungle forest. There is plenty to see and do both in and around the town, though its somnolent atmosphere means relaxing and soaking up the atmosphere is a very pleasant way of whiling away a day or two.
Stay: The Luang Say Residence for colonial grandeur and beautiful, luxurious suites.
See: Any of the 30-plus glittering Buddhist temples scattered around the city and watch the monks receiving alms.
Do: Climb Mount Phousi at dusk for amazing views of the city.
Something special: Sample delicious Laotian fusion cuisine at the famous L’Elephant Restaurant, set in a beautifully renovated colonial building.
Bagan, Burma (Myanmar)
Bagan is an extraordinary collection of Buddhist temples, pagodas, stupas and ruins dating from the 11th and 12th century. Their proximity to each other makes them accessible to visit and the site of many of them from nearby vantage points is lovely, especially in the evening light.
Stay: Thiripyitsaya Sanctuary for elegant gardens, a massive infinity pool and a jacuzzi overlooking the Irrawaddy River.
See: Explore the 2,000-plus temples sprinkled over dry plains and forest to marvel at the different architectural styles and religious iconography that evolved over five centuries of Bagan Kings.
Do: Climb up the volcanic peak of Mount Popa, just outside of Bagan for stunning countryside views.
Something special: Take a boat trip to Kyun Thiri Island to visit a local monastery and learn about the daily lives of this unique agricultural society,
