Bhutan's Highlights with a Twist
Ten days covering the highlights of beautiful Bhutan with an off-the-beaten-track twist.
Some 4000 meters high, Chele La Pass is the highest motorable track in Bhutan, located at the mid-way point between Haa and Paro Valleys. It is an atmospheric place to stop for a snack and get lost amidst the lattice of fluttering prayer flags, beyond which, on a clear day, you can spy awesome views of the Himalayan mountain Jomolhari. As part of an ETG holiday, you can either visit on a day trip from Paro or stop here to break up the road journey between Haa & Paro.
From the peak of Chele La, it’s possible to hike partway back to Paro. The 2-4 hour downhill route will take you past a sky burial site, through meadows and forest soft hemlock and rhododendron towards Kila Nunnery. The remote nunnery clings to the cliff in a similar style to the iconic Tiger's Nest monastery and is home to a community of 30 nuns who live here in self-imposed isolation, hours away from civilisation. Your driver will pick you up at a road near the nunnery for the rest of your journey to Paro.
