Sri Lanka

The Architecture of Geoffrey Bawa & Beyond

Discover Sri Lanka through the lens of its most renowned architect, Geoffrey Bawa, and the rich cultural heritage that inspired him.

Immerse yourself in Bawa’s work by staying in properties he designed, where traditional Sri Lankan and Dutch Colonial influences fuse together in his signature style, tropical modernism. Along the way, you’ll also explore the breadth of Sri Lanka’s architectural legacy, from ancient civilisations to the Kandyan Kingdom.

There’s time, too, to take in the island’s wider cultural highlights, including the Sigiriya rock fortress. And since many of Bawa’s creations are found on the southern coastline, you’ll venture there and round off the trip with a dose of relaxation on palm-fringed beaches. It is a holiday, after all.

Highlights

Lunuganga

Stay at Lunuganga, Bawa’s home and lifelong project and the garden that inspired his career

The Last House

Stay at The Last House, Bawa’s gorgeous beachside villa, which was subsequently turned into a lovely boutique hotel on the beautiful south coast

Cultural Triangle

Explore The Cultural Triangle, where ancient sites like Sigiriya and Anuradhapura show the importance of Sri Lanka in the architecture field since as far back as 1000BC

Kandalama Hotel

Stay at the Kandalama Hotel, one of the best examples of Bawa’s skill in adapting the design to suit the environment. A one-off property in an enchanting location

Everything we had hoped for and more

ETG really listened and discovered not just exactly the type of holiday we wanted, but also what our particular interests and preferences were, so the holiday was completely bespoke. Our brilliant guide took us to meet Vietnamese people where we saw and heard firsthand how they lived and worked. Too many high points to mention.

With ETG, we have visited extraordinary places

... stayed in wondrous hotels, met fascinating everyday people, listened to varied opinions, and learned much about places far away. I couldn't do that on my own.
