Muscat, Oman
There’s no better way to soak in the magic of an Omani sunset than from the water. As the afternoon light begins to soften, set sail along Muscat’s coastline on either a sleek modern catamaran or a traditional wooden dhow – the vessel that has carried Omani fishermen for generations.
With a refreshing drink in hand, watch as the sun dips below the horizon, casting brilliant hues of gold, crimson, and violet across the sky. From the deck, you’ll enjoy a unique perspective of Muscat’s landmarks, from the Old Town to its rugged cliffs and harbour.
The experience is complete with a delicious dinner served onboard as you continue to sail peacefully around the Old Town’s waterfront, taking in the sights under the evening sky.
Wahiba Sands, Oman
Experience the windswept sand dunes of the Omani desert around The Wahiba, otherwise known as the Sharqiya Sands. Here you’ll get a glimpse of Bedouin life and traditions that are sadly rapidly disappearing. The Bedu families live a traditional nomadic life, spending their days raising livestock, using their great understanding of the harsh surrounding environment to get by.
Sit down and share a set of coffee and dates with a Bedu family, admiring their colourful handicrafts and learning about their lifestyle. If you’re up for an adrenaline rush, you can even head out dune bashing as you whizz around the dunes in a 4WD.
Dhofar, Oman
While in Dhofar, a must-see is the spectacular Rub Al Khali desert or ‘Empty Quarter’, the region’s most remarkable sight and the world’s largest expanse of uninterrupted desert.
Visit the fascinating World Heritage Site known as the Lost City of Ubar, a legendary ancient kingdom that was swallowed whole by the desert sands. It was gone without a trace, earning the name ‘Atlantis of the Sands’, before being spotted by satellites and excavated in 1992. Your guide will explain its history before making your way to the Empty Quarter. Take in the incredible views of the dunes and stop for some lunch before returning to Salalah. Along the way, visit Wadi Dawka, otherwise known was the frankincense Wadi, home to the region’s largest collection of frankincense trees. It’s the perfect spot to learn a little more about its use in both the past and modern worlds.
Muscat, Oman
Pods of dolphins are commonly spotted frolicking around Oman’s shores, from Muscat you don’t have to go far from land to watch them glide through the water. There is a good chance you’ll spot a variety of dolphins dipping above and below the ocean on an early morning boat ride.
Cruise along the coastline, enjoying spectacular views of the Muscat peninsula from the ocean before docking in the calm waters of Bandar Khayran, a natural harbour, for some swimming and snorkelling. This is a great spot for a picnic lunch and you can spend much of the day relaxing on one of the beaches, dipping in and out of the water.
Wherever you go, and whatever you do, at the end of every day you can always be sure of a comfortable rest. Every location on our list of hotels is handpicked, and in its own way, shares the history, the hospitality, and the soul of Oman. Below are some examples of the different hotels we use — they’ll live long in your memory.

Oman is one of Arabia’s most rewarding destinations – welcoming, diverse, and refreshingly low-key. With ETG, you’ll explore it with insight: journeying through desert dunes with Bedouin hosts, discovering remote mountain villages, or sailing along the coast on a traditional dhow. Our local guides help you understand the stories behind the scenery, and we take care of the details so you can focus on the experience. This is Oman, done with depth – not just a stopover, but a destination to savour.
Oman is best explored between October and April, when daytime temperatures are warm and pleasant, making it ideal for desert adventures, mountain walks, and city sightseeing. From May to September, the heat becomes intense in most regions, though the southern Dhofar province transforms during the Khareef (monsoon) – turning arid hills into green, misty landscapes that are unique in the Gulf.
Every ETG holiday to Oman is carefully designed to be seamless, immersive, and stress-free. Your journey typically includes international flights (if requested), guide throughout and accommodation in hand-picked, characterful hotels.
You’ll enjoy incredible, immersive experiences unique to you, all planned by dedicated Oman specialists, with the added reassurance of 24/7 in-country support from our local team.
