Sulawesi & The Spice Islands
An extraordinary chance to explore several fascinating cultures, some incredible scenery and diverse native wildlife.
Dominated by the towering Gamalama volcano, the small island of Ternate is filled with history, natural beauty and friendly locals, and in a day tour, there is much to experience. Known as one of the ‘spice islands’, a visit to Ternate wouldn’t be complete without admiring the 350 year old mother of clove trees, ‘Cengkeh Afo’ before visiting clove and cinnamon plantations with shops run by students from the area. You’ll then wander through several forts dating back to the 15th and 16th centuries, once used to control the spice trade on the island. A visit to Sultan’s Palace will then provide an insight into the history of Ternate and the many Sultans that once ruled the land and still do. Lastly, the peculiar yet beautiful Tolire Lake set at the foot of Mount Gamalama is a fascinating stop, comprising a whole ecosystem of its own.
